ACTIVITY OBJECTIVE
This activity allows childcare directors to practice teamwork skills in a simulated environment. By mirroring real-life challenges, you will explore strategies for clear communication, collaborative decision-making, and effective conflict resolution.
1 Divide and Conquer (5 min)
Group Formation:
Divide participants into small groups of 3-4 people. Ensure a mix of experience levels if possible.
Facilitator Prompt:
"Each group will work together on a realistic scenario that childcare centers face daily. Your goal isn't just to solve it, but to demonstrate HOW you work together."
2 Scenario Engagement (15 min)
Distribute one scenario card to each group. Each team must discuss the situation and identify potential hurdles.
Team Deliverables:
Clear Communication Strategy
Collaborative Decision-Making Steps
Conflict Resolution Techniques
3 Sharing & Feedback
Each group briefly presents their scenario and their proposed solution.
Discussion Prompts:
What communication techniques proved most effective?
How did your team handle disagreements?
In what ways can these be applied in your daily work?
Reflection
Ask participants to consider: "What new insights did you gain? How might this influence your management approach?"
Pro-Tip
Use these insights to foster a supportive, collaborative environment in your own center.
Scenario Cards
Cut along the dotted lines and distribute to groups
SCENARIO A
The Schedule Shake-up
A conflict has arisen between two veteran team members regarding sudden scheduling changes for the upcoming summer program. Both claim seniority and refuse to budge on their preferred shifts.
SCENARIO B
Curriculum Clash
Your center is implementing a new STEM-focused curriculum. One half of the leadership team thinks it's too advanced, while the other half thinks it's long overdue. Progress has stalled completely.
SCENARIO C
The Parental Complaint
A group of parents has approached the leadership team with a formal complaint about the center's current discipline policy. The team is divided on whether to defend the policy or revise it immediately.
SCENARIO D
The Policy Pivot
State regulations have changed regarding playground safety. The team needs to implement expensive changes quickly, but there is deep disagreement on which vendor to use and how to allocate the budget.

How to Play
1
Scenario Selection (3 Minutes)
Each team draws one scenario card from the deck. These represent high-pressure moments in center management.
Example scenarios: Resolving staff scheduling conflicts, solving parental complaints, or navigating unpopular policy changes.
2
Problem-Solving Session (7 Minutes)
Teams brainstorm a clear, actionable plan. Focus on the "Triple Threat" of teamwork:
Communication
Collaboration
Resolution
Documentation: Teams must visualize their solution on flip charts. Use icons, flowcharts, or bullet points for rapid delivery.
3
Reflection & Sharing (5 Minutes)
Each team presents their rapid-response plan. Facilitator leads the "Debrief Dialouge."
Debrief Questions:
"Which part of your solution is most applicable to Monday morning?"
"How did you handle disagreements during the 7-minute sprint?"
Facilitator's Pro-Tips
• Pressure Cooker: Keep the timer visible and announce the "2-minute warning" to heighten the energy.
• Watch the Dynamics: Notice who leads and who listens. Use this for the final reflection session.
• Encourage Visuals: The faster they can draw it, the clearer the communication. No essays allowed!
• Monday Morning Filter: Always bring it back to real-world application at the center.
