Lesson: Classroom Garden Roles (2nd Grade)
20 Minutes
Learning Goal
Students will distinguish between the roles of the Head Gardener (Teacher) and the Growing Plant (Student), focusing on "tending their own garden" to build self-regulation.
Key Concept: "Tending My Garden"
"When you tend your own garden, you focus on your own growth. If you spend all your time looking at your neighbor's weeds, your own flowers won't have enough water!"

The Hook: The Messy Garden
Ask: "What if a gardener tried to do everything alone, or if the plants tried to water themselves?" Use this to explain that everyone has a specific role to help our classroom bloom.
3-10m
Instruction: Classroom Garden Slides
Show the slides. Define the teacher as the "Head Gardener" (keeping things safe/healthy) and students as "Growing Plants" (focusing on their own work and learning).
10-18m
Activity: Garden Job Sort
Students sort tasks into the "Gardener's Shed" (Teacher) or "The Flowerbed" (Student). Remind them: Focus on your own paper = tending your own plant!
18-20m
Wrap Up: Garden Goals
Complete the Venn diagram. What do we both do? (E.g., be kind, follow safety rules). Exit ticket: "How will you tend your garden today?"
🌱 Tending the Garden Tip
When a student is distracted by a peer, use the prompt: "Are you tending your own garden right now?" This helps them return to their own "plant" (task) without focusing on others' "weeds" (behaviors).
