The Metaphor: Train Tracks & Levers
Children's brains often run on a straight "Plan A" track. When a block blocks the path (an unexpected change), their engine crashes (a meltdown). This lesson introduces the Track Switcher Lever—a mental tool to safely steer their train onto a new "Plan B" track.
1 Direct Instruction: The Mind Express (5 Minutes)
Express Script (Keep it Snappy!) Active & Fast
"Put on your train conductor hats! [Mimic putting on hat]. Our minds are like powerful steam trains. Usually, we roll down a straight track toward something we expect—like going outside to play on the sunny playground. That is our Expected Track!"
"But look! A giant rain cloud pours rain all over the swings! There is a block on our track! If we try to push through, we crash! [Mimic train crash arms]. So we pull our magical mental lever: the Track Switcher! [Action: Pull lever]. CLICK-CLACK! We switch tracks to indoor playdough games. We kept our minds open and safe!"
Expected Track (Plan A)
- The original, expected plan.
- Feels easy and expected.
Switch Track (Plan B)
- An unexpected block in the plan.
- We pull our lever to pick a new plan.

Express Practice & Reflection The Mind Express
2 Visual Sorting Game: Let's Switch Tracks! (10 Minutes)
Students use visual sorting cards to practice recognizing when a situation is on the Expected Track or requires us to pull the lever and use the Switch Track.
Express Game Strategy (Saves 10 Minutes)
Instead of cutting cards in class, pre-cut the 4 Situation Cards from Page 2 of the worksheet yourself or hold them up as a whole group!
- Hold up a card. Read the scenario aloud.
- If expected: Students make continuous "Chugga-chugga" wheels with their arms.
- If blocked: Teach them to shout: "CLICK-CLACK! SWITCH TRACKS!" while pulling their imaginary heavy levers downward.

The red crayon is broken. Blocked / Switch! "Click-Clack!" Use orange or tape.
Substitute teacher at the door. Blocked / Switch! "Click-Clack!" Wave and say hi!
3 Reflection & Student Worksheet (5 Minutes)
Fast Reflection Prompts
- Is it okay to feel sad when we have to switch tracks? (Yes! It's very normal).
- What happens if our train gets stuck and we refuse to pull the lever? (Our engine gets too hot!).
Worksheet Deployment
During Class: Hand out Page 1. Let students trace the curved lines from the Start Train around the blockage block to the Plan B station.
Send Home: Send Page 2 home with students as a fun family game sheet, or save it for another day's transition work.
