Pedagogical Foundations & Support
The "Safe Space" Setup
Create a physical "Calm Corner" in your room. Equip it with a soft pillow, a mirror to look at expressions, and a bin to store the Calm Jars. Teach children that the corner is never for punishment , but rather a restorative space to recharge and reset.
Routine Integration
Practice belly breathing daily, not just when children are upset. Lead a "Group Breath" during morning circle or right after active recess. Building the physical habit when calm ensures they can easily access the skill under stress.
Reflective Questioning Prompts
Before: "Where do you feel feelings in your body? Does your heart feel fast or slow when you're excited or mad?"
During: "Look at the glitter swirl inside. What do you think happens to our thoughts when we let them swirl? How do we make them settle down?"
After: "When you are angry, is it okay to feel angry? Yes! But what is our job when we have that big stormy feeling? (To keep our body safe and take a slow breath.)"
Observational Assessment Rubric (Pre-K)
Skill Area Beginning Developing Mastered Belly Breathing Breathes quickly or chest-only; does not expand abdomen. Expands abdomen with verbal coaching or hand placement cues. Independently performs deep, slow belly breaths on cue. Counting to Four Rushes counting or stops, struggles with matching breath to count. Counts with teacher support, taking a breath after some numbers. Pairs counting 1-4 with regulated, slow rhythm and pacing. Tool Selection Does not express choice; needs teacher to assign calming tool. Identifies a favorite strategy when prompted from visual choices. Articulates *why* a specific tool helps them feel safe/calm.
Differentiating for Varied Needs
Support: Provide a tactile "breathing buddy" (small stuffed toy) to place on the child's stomach while they lie down; they can watch it physically rise and fall.
Extension: Challenge advanced learners to teach their "Bear Breaths" to a classmate, acting as the peer-calm helper.

Crafting: Our Calm Jars
GLITTER SETTLING...
What Happens in Our Minds?
Shaking the jar is like having a big storm inside. The glitter is swirling, and we can't see clearly!
Watching the jar is like taking our slow deep breaths.
As we breathe, the glitter slowly floats to the bottom . Our minds settle down, too.
Let's make our own magic calm jars now! Slide 5 of 6

Teacher Prompts for Puppet Play & Guided Breath-Work Modeling
Part 1: Puppet Drama — Buddy Bear's Blocks (5 Mins)
Setup: Put bear puppet on hand. Build block tower. Knock it down.
Teacher (as "Buddy"): "Oh no! My blocks! My big castle is broken! GRRR! I feel so mad! I want to throw these blocks! I want to stomp my feet!"
Teacher: "Buddy's shoulders are tight and scrunched. Friends, can you make a mad face like Buddy? Yes! But should Buddy throw blocks? No. Let's help Buddy calm his body down."
Part 2: Guided Modeling — Bear Breaths (5 Mins)
Teacher: "Buddy, let's try Bear Breaths. Pre-K friends, put your hands on your bellies and do it with us. Imagine you have a beautiful flower in one hand, and a small candle in the other."
1. Smell the Flower: "Breathe in slow through your nose. Feel your tummy grow big like a balloon... Fill it up!"
2. Blow the Candle: "Now, blow out through your mouth, very softly. Make the flame wiggle... psssshhhh."
Puppet Buddy: "Ahhh... my belly feels soft now. My heart is slower! Let's do it one more time together!"
Part 3: Turtle's Slow Count (3 Mins)
Teacher: "When our storm is big, let's tuck into our turtle shells and count slow turtle numbers."
"One" (Breath In)
"Two" (Blow Out)
"Three" (Soft Hands)
"Four" (Calm Mind)
Coach: "Touch each finger on your hand as you breathe out. One... Two... Three... Four."
Part 4: Sensory Connection — The Magic Jar (2 Mins)
Teacher (with Calm Jar): "When we shake it, look how fast the glitter swirls! This is like our brain when we feel angry or super silly. We can't see straight!"
"Now, let's place it down. Sit still like a stone and watch. Look at the glitter slowly float down. As it settles, let's take a slow breath. Look! The water is clear again. That's what deep breaths do."
