Detailed Instructions
01
Warm-Up: Weather Report Check-In (4 min)
Ask students to choose a weather icon (sun, clouds, rain, storm) representing their feelings about change. Acknowledge responses using the script for specific phrasing. Use hand signals (1-4 fingers) for a quick visual scan.
02
Vocabulary & Introduction (6 min)
Use the slides to define key terms. Connect "reframing" to "growth mindset." Engage with a quick poll about how students feel about change generally.
03
Guided Discussion: Shifting Perspectives (12 min)
Facilitate discussion using the slides. Focus on "stories we tell ourselves" and how mindset alters experience. Ensure students feel safe sharing both positive and negative experiences.
04
Interactive Activity: Opportunity Telescope (18 min)
Hand out the worksheet. Lead the visualization exercise from the script. Students identify one upcoming change and find two specific growth opportunities. Circulate and support privately.
05
Cool-Down: Pocket Pep Talk (5 min)
Conclude with reflection. Students write a takeaway to "carry in their pocket." End with the core lesson message: "The same waves that knock us off balance can lift us higher if we learn to ride them."

Warm-Up: Weather Report Check-In (4 min)
Read or paraphrase:
"Good morning/afternoon, everyone! To kick us off today, let's do a quick 'Weather Report Check-In.' I want you to think about an upcoming change in your life – maybe it's a new class, a new schedule, a family move, or even just the start of a new week. How do you feel about that change right now?"
"On the screen, you'll see four weather icons: a sun, clouds, rain, and a storm. Choose the one that best represents your current feeling about change. Then, show me your choice with a hand signal – 1 finger for sun, 2 for clouds, 3 for rain, and 4 for storm."
Teacher Action: Pause and observe student responses. Scan the room for the general "forecast."
"Okay, I see a mix of forecasts out there! For those of you showing a 'sun,' what's one word that describes why you're feeling excited?"
"And for those of you with 'rain' or a 'storm,' what's one word that comes to mind about why change can feel a bit tough?"
"Thank you for sharing! It's totally normal to feel a range of emotions when it comes to change, and that's exactly what we're going to explore today."
Vocabulary Spotlight (6 min)
"Let's get some key terms on our radar. Our first word is change . Simple enough, right? It means to make or become different. Life is full of changes!"
"Next, we have uncertainty . This is the feeling of being unsure or not knowing what will happen. Who here likes uncertainty?"
Teacher: Pause for responses, probably laughter or 'no's.
"Most of us don't! It can feel a bit unsettling, can't it?"
"Our third word is reframe . This is super important today. To reframe means to look at something in a new or different way. It's like putting on different glasses to see the same picture differently."
"Finally, we have growth mindset . This is the belief that your abilities can be developed and improved through hard work and dedication. We're aiming for that growth mindset today."
Guided Discussion (12 min)
1. Why does change often feel uncomfortable or difficult? What are some reasons we resist it?
Teacher: Allow 2-3 responses, guide towards fear of unknown, loss of control.
2. Can you think of a time when a change, even if it seemed challenging initially, actually led to something positive or helped you grow?
3. What stories do we sometimes tell ourselves about change?
"For example, if a new student joins our class, what immediate thoughts might pop into our heads?"
