Duration: 30 Minutes
Purpose
Helps students build self-awareness of stress patterns, fostering proactive coping strategies and improving overall well-being and academic performance by equipping them with concrete skills to manage stress.
Objective
The student will identify personal stress triggers, record physiological and emotional responses, and practice at least two tailored relaxation techniques to reduce immediate stress levels.
Preparation
Prepare Session Materials

Assemble: Trigger Reflection Log , Self-Assessment Stress Scale , and Personal Relaxation Toolkit .
Ensure pens or a digital device are available for student use.
Review existing student stress data or previous session notes.
Familiarize yourself with session objectives and prompts.
Instructional Sequence

Introduction & Session Goals
Welcome the student and explain the purpose of the session. Emphasize confidentiality and encourage open, honest reflection. Present the session objectives: identify triggers, track responses, and practice relaxation.

Identifying Stress Triggers
Distribute the Trigger Reflection Log . Ask the student to recall recent stressful moments. Guide them through completing log fields: context, thoughts, emotions, and intensity rating.

Tracking Stress Responses
Introduce the Self-Assessment Stress Scale . Guide the student to rate their physical and emotional responses during each trigger. Discuss patterns, peaks in intensity, and common themes.

Developing Relaxation Strategies
Present the Personal Relaxation Toolkit . Explain and practice at least two techniques (e.g., deep breathing, muscle relaxation, visualization) together. Coach form and pacing.

Reflection & Next Steps
Summarize key insights and encourage daily toolkit use. Schedule follow-up and assign homework.

Practice chosen relaxation skill once daily.
Facilitation Tips
Wait Time: High school students often need extra time to articulate internal emotional states. Don't rush the Trigger Reflection Log.
Modeling: When practicing the relaxation techniques, physically perform them alongside the student to lower their self-consciousness.

1. Deep Breathing (4-2-6)
Calm & Center
Steps:
Sit comfortably with your back straight.
Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of 4.
Hold your breath for a count of 2.
Exhale gently through your mouth for a count of 6.
Repeat for 5 full cycles.

2. Progressive Muscle Relaxation
Release Tension
Steps:
Find a quiet spot and sit or lie down.
Tense your feet muscles for 5 seconds, then release.
Notice the relaxation for 10 seconds.
Work your way up: calves, thighs, stomach, arms, and face.
End with whole-body relaxation for 20 seconds.

3. Guided Visualization
Mental Escape
Steps:
Close your eyes and breathe slowly.
Imagine a peaceful scene (beach, forest, mountain).
Engage all senses: What do you see? Hear? Smell?
Stay in the scene for 2–3 minutes.
Return to the present, counting backward from 5 to 1.
