Instructional Roadmap
1
Introduction & Scenario Skit
5 Mins
Perform or show a brief skit of a student facing a sudden stress detour (e.g., surprise quiz).
Ask: “What did you notice about their reaction?” and “How could they reroute?”
Capture student responses on the whiteboard to activate prior knowledge.
2
Stress Response & Coping Routes
7 Mins
Display slide defining "stress trigger" and the brain's response pathways.
Introduce coping strategies as alternative routes (e.g., grounding, breathing).
Draw a whiteboard map: roadblock (stress) vs. detour (coping).
Differentiation: Provide a written glossary for ELL learners.
3
Personal Trigger Mapping Activity
8 Mins
Distribute the Trigger Map Sheet to each student.
Instruct students to list and illustrate two personal stress situations.
Prompt: “When I see..., I feel...”
Extension: Identify physical or emotional cues (e.g., racing heart).
4
Guided Breathing Practice
6 Mins
Explain box breathing steps: Inhale–Hold–Exhale–Hold.
Play the audio guide and lead students through one full cycle together.
Notice changes in heart rate and focus.
5
Reflection & Planning
4 Mins
Ask: “What is one next step you'll take when you hit a detour?”
Commitment: Students jot “Next time I feel stressed, I will...” in their planners or on their sheet.

Stress Detour Skit
"Imagine you’re called on for a pop quiz you didn’t study for..."
How might you react physically and mentally?
How could you reroute to feel calmer?
What is a Trigger?
"A situation or event that sets off your body’s alarm system."
Recognizing triggers helps you spot stress detours before they overwhelm you.

Introduction & Scenario Skit
5 Minutes
Display Slide 1: Stress GPS
“Good morning, everyone! Today we’re going on a 30-minute journey called Stress GPS. We’re going to map out our stress ‘detours’ and practice a calming technique so that when stress pops up, we know exactly where to go. Let’s get started!”
Advance to Slide 2: Your Roadmap
“Here’s our roadmap for today. By the end of this lesson, you’ll know your triggers and have a detour ready. We’ll start with a skit, learn how our brain responds to stress, map our own triggers, and practice a special breathing technique.”
Advance to Slide 3: Stress Detour Skit
ACTION:
Invite two volunteers (Alex and Jamie) to act out the surprise pop quiz scenario. Alex acts panicked; Jamie suggests breathing.
“Great job! What did you notice about Alex’s reaction? What emotions or thoughts popped up? How could Alex re-route to feel calmer instead of letting stress drive the bus?”
Capture student keywords (Panic, Heart Racing) on the whiteboard.
2
Stress Response & Routes
7 Minutes
Advance to Slide 4: What is a Trigger?
“Now let’s look under the hood. A stress trigger is any situation that sets off your body’s alarm. When the alarm goes off, your brain sends signals that speed up your heart and flood you with worry. Can anyone share a time you felt that ‘alarm’?”
Advance to Slide 5: Coping Detours
“Think of stress as a roadblock. Coping strategies are the detours. I’m going to draw our metaphor on the board.”
ACTION: Sketch a road with a 'Roadblock' (Trigger) and an arrow showing a 'Detour' (Coping).
3
Personal Trigger Mapping
8 Minutes
Advance to Slide 6: Your Stress Map
ACTION:
Distribute the Trigger Map Sheet. Circulate and assist students who might be struggling to name a trigger.
“Time for your turn at the wheel. On your map sheet, list two situations that usually trigger your stress. Draw or describe how it feels—maybe it's a tight chest or racing thoughts. If you need a start, try: ‘When I see ____, I feel ____.’"
4
Guided Breathing Practice
6 Minutes
Advance to Slide 7: Box Breathing
“Now we’ll practice Box Breathing—a simple detour around stress. Sit up tall. We’re going to follow a guided track. Follow my lead.”
