Stress Lab Teacher Guide Stress Lab
Teacher Protocol
Grade Level Grade 6
Objective
Students will investigate the physiological and emotional impacts of stress and conduct controlled "experiments" with three different stress-management categories (Breathing, Movement, and Creative Expression) to identify their personal "Calm Formula."
Essential Questions
• What triggers my "Pressure Gauge"?
• How does my body react to stress?
• Which strategies actually lower my stress "voltage"?
Lab Equipment
Stress Lab Slides
Lab Report Worksheets
Calm Station Instruction Cards
Pencils & Coloring Supplies
Lab Procedure (60 Minutes)
01
The Pressure Gauge (10m)
Engage: Define stress as "energy in the body." Use the slides to identify common 6th-grade stressors (grades, sports, social media). Students mark their current "Pressure Level" on their Lab Report.
02
Station Rotation: The Experiments (35m)
Explore: Divide class into 3 groups. Rotate through stations every 10 minutes.
• Station A (Oxygen Lab): Mindful Breathing.
• Station B (Kinetic Lab): Physical Relaxation (Progressive Muscle Relaxation).
• Station C (Creative Lab): Expressive Doodling or "Brain Dumping."
03
Data Analysis & Synthesis (10m)
Explain/Elaborate: Students look at their results. Which station lowered their "Pressure Level" the most? Share findings with a lab partner.
04
The Calm Formula (5m)
Evaluate: Complete the Exit Ticket. Students commit to one strategy for the upcoming week.
Expert Facilitator Tips
Handling Resistance
Some students may find breathing or movement exercises "weird" or "awkward." Frame them as biological hacks. "We are literally hacking your nervous system to send a 'Safe' signal to your brain." This scientific framing often appeals to middle schoolers.
Sensitive Topics
Stress can sometimes be a signal of deeper issues (trauma, home life). If a student becomes visibly upset or disengaged during the stressor identification phase, provide an "opt-out" option to draw quietly or speak with a counselor.
Station Setup Guide
Station A
The Oxygen Lab
Requires: Quiet space, Box Breathing visuals. Encourage students to keep their eyes closed or focused on one spot.
Station B
The Kinetic Lab
Requires: Space to stand or sit comfortably. Focus on "Squeeze and Release." Tense hands for 5 seconds, then drop. Repeat for shoulders, toes, and face.
Station C
The Creative Lab
Requires: Scratch paper, markers, colored pencils. Prompt: "Doodle the feeling of stress on the left, doodle the feeling of calm on the right."
Adaptations
For High Energy Groups:
Increase the "Kinetic Lab" time. Use wall sits or high-intensity bursts followed by immediate stillness to demonstrate the physical shift.
For Quiet Groups:
Provide more "Brain Dump" prompts at the Creative Lab, such as "List 5 things that make you feel safe" to help spark thinking.

THE PRESSURE GAUGE
Stress isn't "bad." It's just energy in your body preparing you for a challenge.
Common Triggers
Upcoming Exams
Social Friction
Overbooked Schedules
Current Internal Voltage
LAB SAFETY PROTOCOL
Respect the Quiet
Many experiments require internal focus. Keep voices at Level 0 or 1.
Zero Judgement
Some techniques might feel "weird." That's okay! Be open to the data.
Log Your Results
Be honest in your lab report. There are no right or wrong feelings.
Today's Lab Stations
A
OXYGEN LAB (Breathing)
Testing how air intake affects your heart rate and focus.
B
KINETIC LAB (Movement)
Testing how muscle tension and release affects physical stress.
C
CREATIVE LAB (Expression)
Testing how getting thoughts out of your head affects your mood.
Experiment A
BOX BREATHING
This technique is used by Navy SEALs to stay calm under intense pressure.
1
Inhale for 4 seconds
2
Hold for 4 seconds
3
Exhale for 4 seconds
4
Hold for 4 seconds
Trace the Box
with your eyes
Experiment B
SQUEEZE & RELEASE
The Procedure
Squeeze fists tight for 5s
Drop and feel the "weight"
Squeeze shoulders to ears
Drop and exhale
The Science
When we "release," we signal our nervous system to turn off the "fight or flight" response and move into "rest and digest."
Experiment C
THE BRAIN DUMP
Stress is often just "looping thoughts." Putting them on paper stops the loop.
Write what's on your mind
Doodle how stress feels
"Your paper is the trash can for your stress. Leave it all there."

Stress Lab Station Cards Station A
THE OXYGEN LAB
THE MISSION:
Test how "Box Breathing" affects your internal pressure. This technique resets your nervous system by balancing oxygen and carbon dioxide.
1
Inhale slowly for 4 seconds.
2
Hold your breath for 4 seconds.
3
Exhale slowly for 4 seconds.
4
Hold your breath for 4 seconds.
Repeat this loop 4 times, then record your data!
Station B
THE KINETIC LAB
THE MISSION:
Test the "Squeeze & Release" method. By intentionally creating tension, you can "trick" your muscles into a deeper state of relaxation when you let go.
Step 1: The Fists
Clench your fists as tight as possible. Hold for 5 seconds. Now... DROP. Feel the tension flow out of your fingers.
Step 2: The Shoulders
Shrug your shoulders up to your ears. Hold tight for 5 seconds. Now... DROP. Imagine your shoulders are heavy like lead.
Step 3: The Face
Scrunch your face up like you just ate a lemon. Hold for 5 seconds. Now... RELEASE. Let your jaw hang loose.
Station C
THE CREATIVE LAB
THE MISSION:
Test the "Brain Dump." Sometimes stress is just too much data in your head. Moving it to paper clears your mental "RAM."
Choose One Experiment:
The Word Waterfall
Write down every single thing on your mind right now for 3 minutes. Don't worry about spelling or grammar. Just dump it.
The Abstract Storm
Use colors and shapes to draw "The Feeling of Stress" in the box on your lab report. When finished, draw "The Feeling of Calm" over it.
"Your paper is the trash can for your stress. Leave it all there."
