SQUAD STARTER
Your daily launchpad to finding your crew, reading the vibes, and mastering 6th grade.
Welcome, Future 6th Graders!
Let's Begin
DAY 1
The Common Thread
Active Connection Warm-Up
STAND UP IF...
Stand up if you hear an option that describes YOU:
- 1 You'd rather travel to the future than the past.
- 2 Your favorite school lunch is pizza or tacos.
- 3 You talk to your pets like they are humans.
- 4 You are excited and nervous for 6th grade.
YOUR MISSION
Find a Neighbor
Turn to someone who stood up for the same thing you did. Introduce yourself.
Discover 2 Common Ground Points
Find two unexpected things you both share (favorite game, sibling count, same bus route, hobbies, etc.).
Ready? You have 2 minutes! Go!

DAY 2
The Vibe Decoder
Social Cues & Body Language
Starting middle school means meeting lots of new people. We can read their body language and tone of voice to understand what they are feeling without them saying a single word!
Scenario A
The Hood & Sigh
Your classmate sits down, pulls up their hood, rests their head on the desk, and lets out a long, heavy sigh.
Decode It:
What are they feeling? How could you help or give space?
Scenario B
The Quick Glancer
A peer stands near your desk, clutching their folder, looking at your empty adjacent chair, and then back at you with a small, brief smile.
Decode It:
What do they want? How can you warmly invite them to sit down?
Discuss with an elbow partner how you would decode and handle each scenario. Daily Check-In Slide
DAY 3
Joining the Circle
Social Strategy & Friendship Rules
1
Scope & Align
Look for open circles, friendly faces, or people with indicators (a cool laptop sticker, graphic tee, or lunchbox character).
Tip: Keep your body posture relaxed and shoulders open.
2
The "Low-Bar" Entry
Don't worry about saying the perfect, clever thing. Use simple, direct starter questions that make it easy for others to say yes.
"Hey, is anyone sitting here?"
"Mind if I join your table?"
Activity
3-Word Game
Meet someone new, but speak in exactly three-word sentences!
"Hey there friend."
"Mind if join?"
Practicing active inclusion makes school feel safe for everyone. Daily Check-In Slide
DAY 4
My Support Circle
Community Mapping
You are never navigating 6th grade alone.
Your "support circle" consists of teachers, staff, family, and peers. Knowing who to turn to for help is a genuine superpower.
Navigators (Directions & Schedules)
Anchors (Support & Listening)
Boosters (Energy & Shared Smiles)
Let's Brainstorm
?
Lost or Late to Class
Who is nearby to help?
Teacher / Staff
!
Need a Peer Assist
Stuck locker or missed a task step.
Desk Neighbor
Feeling Overwhelmed
Need a quiet space to reset.
Counselor / Advisor
Keeping a list of navigators handy is a great way to relieve early-school anxiety. Daily Check-In Slide
DAY 5
Compass to Sixth Grade
Launchpad Celebration
Ready For Takeoff
You've built the network. Now use it!
Middle school is an adventure, but you don't travel alone. This week, you discovered how to spot connections, decode body language, enter new circles, and list your support navigators.
LAUNCHPAD CHALLENGE
The One-Word Launch
As a whole class, we will go around the room in a rapid-fire sequence. Share ONE word that represents how you want to show up on the very first day of 6th grade.
Your word could be: Brave, Curious, Friendly, Spark, Open, or Ready!
Congratulations! You are officially ready to excel in 6th grade! Daily Check-In Slide

Daily Connection Routines & Facilitation Guide
Theme Focus Peer Connection & Belonging
The 15-Minute Daily Blueprint
The transition to 6th grade can trigger intense social anxiety. "Squad Starter" is a structured 15-minute morning routine designed to lower barriers, make social dynamics transparent, and build a safe, shared peer vocabulary.
Phase 1: Warm-Up (4 Min)
Project & Activate
Display the day's slide immediately as students enter. Read prompts aloud to drive immediate focus.
Phase 2: Action (7 Min)
Peer Interaction
Students form pairs, share, play the short active game, or brainstorm solutions to social scenarios.
Phase 3: Debrief (4 Min)
Whole-Group Anchor
Gather back. Ask 1-2 reflection questions. Highlight key strategies and transition smoothly.
DAY 1
The Common Thread (Active Discovery)
Objective: Lower peer-to-peer barriers by discovering unexpected shared experiences and normalizing nervousness.
Facilitation Moves
- Instruct students to stand silent during the read-aloud options.
- Have them look around at who else is standing to build visual connection.
- Prompt them to find a partner who stood up for the same item.
Debrief Prompts & Focus
- "What is one surprising thing you found in common with your partner?"
- Point out that almost 90% of the room stood up for the last option (nervous/excited).
- Key: "Nervousness is normal."
DAY 2
The Vibe Decoder (Reading Social Cues)
Objective: Explicitly teach and practice decoding body language and non-verbal cues to reduce misinterpretations.
Facilitation Moves
- Read Scenario A. Have a student model the posture (hood up, heavy sigh).
- Model Scenario B (clutching folder, looking back and forth, brief smile).
- Give pairs 90 seconds to answer: "What does this person want or feel?"
Debrief Prompts & Focus
- "In Scenario A, how can we support them without invading their space?"
- "In Scenario B, what is the best low-pressure way to invite them?"
- Key: "Cues give us clues on how to connect."
