Introduction to Advertising (4 min)
Display Slide 2
"Today, we're going to talk more about advertisements, or 'ads' for short. Take a look at this slide. Ads are simply messages that companies create to tell you about their products or services. Why do you think companies want us to know about their products? What's their main goal?"
Interaction Guide
Allow students to share ideas, guiding them towards concepts like selling products , making money , or getting people to try things .
"Exactly! They want you to buy their stuff, try something new, or believe their product is the best. It's how businesses work."
Display Slide 3
"And where do we see these ads? Can you name some places?"
Prompt for TV, internet, billboards, magazines, radio, YouTube, games.
"That's right, they're everywhere! Most ads are just trying to show you something cool. But sometimes, ads can be a little... sneaky. Has anyone ever felt like an ad was trying to trick them?"
03
Understanding Negative Ads (5 min)
Display Slide 4
"Today we're going to learn about 'sneaky ads,' or 'negative advertising.' Look at our slide. A sneaky ad is one that tries to make you feel bad about yourself, or like you're missing out, all so you'll buy their product."
"If an ad makes you feel sad because you don't have a certain toy, or worried that your clothes aren't cool enough, then it's being sneaky. It's trying to make you think you NEED their product to feel better."
Example Discussion
"Imagine an ad shows kids laughing with a new game, and one kid sitting alone, looking sad. What feeling is that ad trying to give you? Why would they do that?"
Facilitate a short discussion. Reinforce: "You are awesome just the way you are! No ad should make you feel bad about yourself."
