Signal Reboot Clinician Guide Tier 2 Counseling Middle School (Grades 7–8)
Session Length: 20–30 Minutes
Signal Reboot Clinician Guide
Individual intervention for identifying somatic states (Stuck vs. Distracted vs. Tired) and mastering self-advocacy scripts.
Developmental Framing: The "Defiant/Lazy" Misdiagnosis
8th graders frequently experience task paralysis (executive dysfunction or academic anxiety) and mask it as apathy, sleeping, or off-task behavior to protect peer standing. Differentiating internal state cues prevents behavioral escalation and builds interoceptive awareness before disengagement sets in.
Session Agenda & Rapid Pacing Guide (25 Minutes)
1
Brief Check-In & Fuel Gauge (0–5 min)
5 mins
Establish rapport without questioning performance. Have the student rate their physical battery (1–10) and identify current environmental friction points from earlier classes today.
Opening Hook: "When your phone is glitching, you check whether the battery died, the WiFi cut out, or an app crashed. Our brains glitch the exact same way during class."
2
Focused Activity: The Diagnostic Triad (5–17 min)
12 mins
Use Page 1 of the Student Worksheet. Map somatic body cues across the 3 states:
Tired
Heavy eyelids, slumped posture, slow processing, yawning.
Distracted
Itchy fingers, browser tab hopping, tracking peers, racing thoughts.
Stuck
Staring at line 1, chest tightness, defensive irritation, pen tapping.
3
Practice Round: Script Builder & Rehearsal (17–25 min)
8 mins
Build a no-shame, 3-part advocacy formula: [What I started] + [Where I froze] + [Specific ask] . Run two 45-second live practice reps where clinician plays the teacher.
Mastery Indicators:
Accurately labels 2 personal body cues for being "Stuck".
Distinguishes cognitive freeze from disinterest or fatigue.
Session Artifacts Produced:
Completed Personal Signal Map worksheet.
1 personalized, rehearsed verbal or sticky-note script.

Facilitator Prompts & Rehearsal Lab
Interoceptive Probing Prompts (Use During Activity)
When distinguishing Tired vs. Stuck:
"If I handed you your favorite snack or told you your phone just buzzed, would your eyes instantly pop open? If yes, you're not physically depleted—your brain hit a wall on this task."
When distinguishing Distracted vs. Stuck:
"Are you looking at other people because you genuinely don't care, or because staring at question 4 makes your stomach drop? Often, wandering off is just a shield against feeling dumb."
Pinpointing the Exact Freeze Point:
"Saying 'I don't get any of it' makes the mountain too big. Where was the very last word or step you actually understood? That’s where the bridge broke."
Quick Practice Round: 8th-Grade Classroom Simulations
Scenario A: Pre-Algebra Independent Work Spoken
The student completed problem 1, but problem 2 introduces multi-step distributive properties. Student puts head down.
Target Script: "Mr. Evans, I solved problem 1, but on problem 2 I'm confused about which side to move the variable to."
Scenario B: ELA Essay Drafting Discreet Note
The student has the topic sentence but has been staring at evidence requirements for 12 minutes without typing.
Target Script: [Sticky note on desk corner] "I have my claim. Need help finding a quote that proves it when you walk by."
Clinical Pivot Strategies for Reluctant Students
Student Objection Recommended Clinician Counter "I don't want to look stupid in front of the class." Normalize: Offer non-verbal signals (pencil tilted on book, yellow sticky note) or discreet desk check-ins agreed on with teacher beforehand. "The teacher talks too fast / gets annoyed." Validate, then reframe: Teachers get annoyed at "I don't get it" (vague). They love "I got step 1, stuck on step 2" because it takes 15 seconds to fix.
Wrap-Up & Check-Out (Last 2 Minutes)
Give student the Pocket Rescue Card. Agree on one class period today to test their script.
Follow-up Check: 24–48 hrs

01 The Diagnostic Triad: Which State Are You In?
Check the signs you notice most often
Tired (Low Battery)
Your body is out of physical fuel.
Heavy eyelids / yawning Slumped over or chin on desk Words blur on paper or screen
Fix: Cold water splash, deep breath, stand up.
Distracted (Signal Jam)
Your focus got hijacked by something else.
Switching tabs / doodling Watching hallway or classmates Thinking about after school / drama

02 My Personal Body Cues (Write your own physical warnings)
When I'm TIRED, my body:
When I'm DISTRACTED, my brain:
When I'm STUCK, my reaction:
The 3-Step Protocol: What To Do When You're Stuck
EXECUTE IN CLASS BEFORE GIVING UP
STEP 1: UNDERLINE THE VERB
Circle or underline what the question is asking you to actually DO (e.g., Explain, Solve, Compare ).
STEP 2: FIND THE EXACT WALL
Don't say "all of it." Pinpoint the first step, word, or formula piece that doesn't make sense.
STEP 3: DEPLOY THE SCRIPT
Turn to page 2 and use your advocacy script so the teacher can give you a 20-second fix.
FIELD OPS // SCRIPT BUILDER MODULE 02: SELF-ADVOCACY
The Self-Advocacy Script Lab
Teachers hate guessing why you're stopped. When you ask specifically, help takes 30 seconds.
The "No-Awkwardness" 3-Part Help Formula
1. What I Did
"I finished step 1..." or "I read the prompt..."
2. Where I Froze
"...but I'm not sure how to set up the equation."
3. What I Need
"Can you show me what the next step looks like?"
03 Pick Your Delivery Style: Fill in your custom scripts
Style A: The Walk-By Whisper Spoken
Best when teacher is circulating the classroom.
"Hey [Teacher], I got through , but I'm stuck on . Can you check my first step?"
