Understanding Self-Talk
Track 02
The Two Audio Tracks
Every day, our mind plays a continuous background track. Sometimes, a critical voice takes over the mixer, distorting our reality.
Self-esteem isn't about ignoring the tough stuff—it's about learning how to turn down the volume of the critic and boost the track of self-compassion.
The Critical Track
Loud, repetitive, filters out the good, magnifies mistakes, and makes sweeping predictions about failure.
The Compassionate Track
Fair, evidence-based, focuses on learning from bumps, and acknowledges your natural strengths.

Cognitive Distortions
Track 03
Distortion Detectors
Cognitive distortions are mental "filters" or static that warp the truth. Here are three common distortions that hijack self-esteem:
Mind Reading
Assuming you know exactly what others are thinking about you (and assuming it’s always bad) without any real proof.
"Everyone thinks I'm boring."
Catastrophizing
Blowing problems out of proportion or assuming the absolute worst-case scenario will definitely happen.
"I messed up this slide; I'll fail forever."
All-or-Nothing
Seeing things in black-and-white. If you aren't completely perfect at something, you view yourself as a total failure.
"Since I got one wrong, the project is ruined."
Key distortions block us from seeing our true capabilities. 03 / 07
CBT Re-framing
Track 04
The Remix Method
How to isolate, filter, and balance negative thought tracks in real-time.
1
Notice the Static
Catch the critical thought as it starts. Ask: "Is this a helpful track or just background static?"
2
Check the Signals
Is there hard evidence to support this thought? Is it a cognitive distortion? What are the actual facts?
3
Remix the Track
Rewrite the thought using fair, accurate, compassionate facts. Turn up the self-efficacy volume!
Reframing is a skill that strengthens with daily recording. 04 / 07
Strengths-Based Approach
Track 05
Hunting for Personal Gold
A strengths-based approach isn't about ignoring growth areas. It's about recognizing that your talents and qualities are real, measurable, and useful.
When we only scan for errors, we forget that our unique strengths are our ultimate protective shield against self-doubt.
Mental Spark
Curiosity, problem-solving, strategic thinking, creativity, and focused learning.
Heart Spark
Empathy, loyalty, kindness, active listening, and supporting friends or family.
Grit Spark
Resilience, persistence, organization, boundary-setting, and bounce-back power.
Vibe Spark
Humor, lightheartedness, optimism, enthusiasm, and calming energy.
Self-efficacy builds by deliberately recalling when you succeeded. 05 / 07

The Coping Control Board
When self-criticism triggers overwhelm, select a specific dial on your dashboard to bring yourself back to baseline.
Grounding
The 5-4-3-2-1 technique or box breathing to disengage from racing thoughts.
Reframing
Writing your CBT thought record to check evidence and find a compassionate rewrite.
Self-Soothing
Engaging your senses with a warm drink, heavy blanket, pleasant scent, or calming lo-fi music.
Social Connection
Reaching out to a trusted team member, writing a text, or asking for high-fidelity support.
Coping skills function best when decided upon beforehand, not during high distress. 06 / 07
