Pacing Overview
Hook & Tone Disconnect: 3 min
Behind the Avatar: 5 min
The Re-Draft Activity: 7 min
Exit Rule & Synthesis: 5 min
1 Hook: The "Sent vs. Seen" Disconnect
00:00 – 03:00 (3 Mins)
Display Slide 2 ("The 'Fine.' Experiment"). Show the single word text: "Fine." Ask students: "How does this sound in your head?"
Teacher Script Prompt: "Notice how 10 people read that single word in 10 different moods—angry, sarcastic, dismissive, or completely neutral. When we're behind a glass screen, our brains fill in tone gaps with our worst assumptions."
2 Direct Instruction: The Screen Filter Effect
03:00 – 08:00 (5 Mins)
Display Slide 3. Introduce the two psychological traps of texting/commenting:
1. Invisible Audience Bias
We type to an icon, not a human face. We miss micro-expressions, posture, and vocal inflection that naturally stop us from being cruel in person.
2. Dogpile Momentum
In group chats or comment sections, snark gets instant laugh emojis or upvotes. Cruelty gets gamified into social points.
Discussion Anchor: "Why is it 10 times easier to leave a savage comment than to say that exact sentence looking someone straight in the eye?" (Solicit 2 quick student voices).

Activity Implementation & Wrap-Up
Phases 3 & 4 + Teacher Guide Notes
3 Micro-Activity: "The Re-Draft" Challenge
08:00 – 15:00 (7 Mins)
Distribute the Screen Empathy Activity Handout . Have students pair up or work with an elbow partner.
Step 1 (2m): Pairs read Scenario A (gaming group chat roast) or Scenario B (misunderstood social plan text) and diagnose: What was the sender feeling? What did the receiver actually absorb?
Step 2 (3m): Write an Empathetic Re-Draft that sets boundaries or tells the truth without humiliating or isolating the other person.
Step 3 (2m): Cold-call 2 pairs to read their original roast vs. their re-drafted text aloud.
4 Debrief & The "3-Second Rule" Commitment
15:00 – 20:00 (5 Mins)
Display Slide 5. Share the practical tool 8th graders can use immediately on their phones tonight:
The 3-Second Rule (Before hitting Send / Post):
1. Pause: Would I say this to their face in front of their family?
2. Perspective: If they're having a terrible day, how will this land?
3. Purpose: Am I saying this to solve something or just to win clout?
Anticipated 8th-Grade Pushback & Teacher Moves
"It was just banter / a joke": Respond: "Banter requires both people laughing. If one person goes quiet or logs off, it's not banter—it's target practice."
"They should just ignore it": Respond: "Our brains process digital rejection in the same neural pathways as physical pain. You don't 'just ignore' pain."
Support / ELL
Provide sentence frames for the re-draft: "Hey, when you said ____, I felt ____. Can we talk about ____ instead?"
If You Have 30 Minutes
Add a silent roleplay where students pass back-and-forth written notes with no facial expressions, observing how quickly misunderstandings escalate.

The Screen Filter: What Goes Missing
In Person
• Face cues: We see flinching, smiles, and hesitation.
• Voice tone: Pitch and volume reveal humor or hurt.
• Natural brakes: Empathy physically stops us from going too far.
Behind the Screen
• Invisible person: You type to an avatar or glass screen.
• Instant crowd clout: Snark earns quick fire emojis and likes.
• Delayed impact: You don't see them cry or stare at their bedroom ceiling.
03:00 – 08:00 • Teacher Instruction & Reflection
Part 3 • Partner Activity (7 Mins) Worksheet Challenge
The Re-Draft Challenge
