Purpose
The Royal Break Cards are designed as a visual self-regulation tool. By using a consistent, high-interest theme (Royal Purple and Gold), we increase student engagement and ownership over their emotional regulation process. These cards provide clear, binary choices to reduce decision fatigue when a student is becoming dysregulated.
1. Introduction
- The Hook: Introduce the cards during a "calm" time. Tell the student they are the "Royal Guardian" of their own peace.
- Model: Role-play how to point to or pick up a card when feeling "yellow" (frustrated) or "red" (angry).
- Placement: Tape the cards to the desk corner or place them on a ring for easy access.
2. Prompting Use
- Low-Intrusion Prompts: Use a non-verbal gesture (pointing to the card) when you see early signs of dysregulation.
- Verbal Cue: "It looks like you need a Royal Reset. Which card do you want to use?"
- Timer: Pair the break with a visual timer (3-5 minutes) to ensure a clear beginning and end.
Strategy Insights
The Classroom Card
Use this for micro-breaks. The goal is to keep the student in the learning environment while providing enough sensory input/output to reset the nervous system without full escape.
The Regulation Room Card
Use this for macro-breaks. This card is for when the sensory load of the classroom is too high. It provides "Heavy Work" (sensory tools) and "Expressive Output" (drawing).
Troubleshooting

Fix: Provide a forced choice. "I see you're struggling. I will pick for you today: Let's take 3 breaths together."
