Middle School ISS Restorative Framework & Rules
Restorative Reset Grades 6-8
The Restorative Mission
The Reset Room is not merely a punitive holding space. It is a highly structured, calm environment designed to halt disruptive behaviors, facilitate honest self-reflection on peer pressure, and teach adaptive decision-making skills. Every interaction must remain calm, objective, and supportive.
1. Room Setup & Behavioral Environment
Physical Layout
- Isolate Distractions: Desks must face the wall or individual screens to minimize peer eye contact.
- Neutral Aesthetics: Remove highly stimulating posters. Maintain clear, posted visual schedules.
- Restorative Zone: Dedicate one desk near the educator for intake & reflection conversations.
Classroom Norms
- Zero Inter-Student Interaction: Absolutely no speaking, whispering, gesturing, or passing notes.
- No Personal Tech: All personal cell phones, smartwatches, and non-academic sites are locked up or blocked.
- Controlled Movement: Bathroom and water breaks are strictly scheduled and supervised.
2. The Hourly Progression Protocol
| Phase / Time | Key Actions & Student Expectations | Staff Role |
|---|
| 1. Intake (First 30m) | Student checks in, relinquishes personal devices, reviews room norms, and completes the Fresh Start Intake Pack. | Enforce, Check |
| 2. Skill Work (Hourly) | Student works on academic assignments provided by regular teachers or alternative social-emotional skill modules. | Academic Help |
| 3. Reflection (Midday) | Educator holds a 1-on-1 restorative mini-conference reviewing the peer pressure/decision-making answers in the Intake Pack. | Facilitate |
| 4. Re-entry (End of Day) | Verify that the My Day Tracker Sheet scores average ≥ 3. Conduct re-entry contract signing and schedule standard check-in. | Debrief & Sign |

3. Restorative Questioning Framework
Avoid placing blame during reflection. Instead, use these restorative questions designed to foster self-awareness, help students realize how peer pressure influenced their choices, and determine how to make amends.
Phase 1: What Happened? (Objective Reality)
"Can you walk me through the situation like a security camera recording it—just the facts, with no opinions?"
Purpose: Helps separate the student's feelings from objective actions and reduces defensiveness.
Phase 2: The Peer Dynamic (Grades 6-8 Focus)
"How did the presence of your peers influence what you decided to do in that split second?"
Purpose: Targets the biological drive for peer approval. Encourages them to name the internal social pressure.
Phase 3: Impact & Repair (Restorative Plan)
"Who was impacted by this choice, and what concrete steps can we take to repair that relationship?"
Purpose: Shifts from focusing on punishment to understanding consequences and creating a proactive plan to restore trust.
4. Defusing Pushback & De-escalation Scripts
Suspended students may challenge your authority or refuse to complete work. Respond with calm, formulaic, and non-reactive verbal frames.
If Student Refuses to Work
"This is dumb. I'm not doing this."
Your Script: "I hear that you're frustrated. Right now, doing this work is how you show you are ready to get back to your classes. I'll give you five minutes to rest, and then I will help you start with problem number one."
If Student Blames Others
"Why am I here? Tyler started it!"
Your Script: "We will address Tyler's choices separately. Right now, we are focusing on your actions and how you can control your own responses. Let's look at your part of this situation so we can move forward."
5. Re-entry Protocol & Accountability
Suspension is only effective if the transition back is smooth and supportive. Use this sequence before release:
- Step 1: Metric Verification Confirm the student earned an average of 3 or higher on their hourly tracker throughout the suspension.
- Step 2: Restorative Handshake Escort the student to the classroom teacher they disrupted. Prompt the student to read their apology/repair commitments.
- Step 3: Check-In Schedule Schedule 2-minute morning check-ins for the next 3 days to keep them connected and prevent immediate relapse.

3. Peer Dynamics & The Spotlight
In middle school, our brains are highly sensitive to who is around us. Sometimes we act differently to impress others, fit in, or protect ourselves. Be honest as you answer these questions.
Who was near you when the decision was made? How did their presence affect what you did?
What is one thing you felt in that moment? (e.g., pressure to laugh, anger, wanting to look tough, or boredom?)
4. The Re-Route Map
Imagine we can rewind time to right before you made that choice. Walk through how you could change the path next time.
The Path Chosen
The Trigger / Event:
The Automatic Response (Peer Influence):
The New Re-Route Path
A Pause Strategy (e.g., walk away, take a breath):
A Different Choice (A positive response):
5. Restoring Relationships
Your behavior impacted others (teachers, classmates, or yourself). What specific, concrete action will you take to repair that relationship when you return?

How the Tracker Works
Every hour, evaluate yourself on work completion and behavior. Your coordinator will assign a final score. You must average 3 or higher to show readiness to return to regular classes.
4 = Exceptional 3 = Meeting Standards 2 = Minor Redirect 1 = Unsatisfactory
