Teacher Strategy Guide
The Root of Resistance
Work avoidance and shutting down are rarely about defiance. Most often, they are stress responses . When a student feels overwhelmed, their brain enters a "freeze" state. This guide provides actionable strategies to move a student from survival mode back into a "ready to learn" state.
Proactive Shifts
Low-Stakes Start: Begin with a task the student has already mastered.
Chunking: Present only one step at a time on a separate slip of paper.
Visual Timers: Use sand timers or digital clocks to define "work bursts."
Environmental Cues
Designated "Reset" Zone: A quiet corner with sensory tools and no work.
Non-Verbal Support: Place a hand on the desk or a sticky note without speaking.
Flexible Seating: Allow the student to stand or sit on the floor for high-stress tasks.
Signs of a Regulation Break
Avoidance No eye contact, head on desk
Withdrawal Stonewalling or one-word answers
Physicality Tapping, pacing, or stiff posture
Response & Recovery
1
Connection Before Correction
Address the feeling before the behavior. Validating their struggle reduces the "threat" response in the brain.
"I notice your body looks very tight right now. It looks like this task feels really big. Is that right?"
"I can see you're having a hard time getting started. I'm going to sit here for a minute until we feel ready together."
2
The 2-Minute Pivot
When a student shuts down, offer a low-pressure alternative to rebuild their sense of competence.
Immediate Actions
The Co-Work: "Let's do the first one together. I'll write, you tell me the first letter."
The Errand: "I need this paper to go to the office. Can you take a walk and bring it back for me?"
The Choice: "Would you like to use the blue pen or the pencil for this?"
3
Returning to the Task
Once regulated, use the "Plan B" method (Ross Greene) to investigate the barrier.
The Empathy Step
"What's up? I've noticed you've had a hard time with the math sheet."
Define the Problem
"The concern is that the work needs to be done so I know how to help you."
The Invitation
"I wonder if there is a way we can [solve student's concern] while also making sure [teacher's concern is met]. Do you have any ideas?"
Remember: Regulation comes before reasoning.
