Guiding Our Growth: Step-by-Step Delivery
5th - 6th Grade
00 - 10 min
Introduction & Warm-Up
Begin with the 'Reflect & Connect' warm-up prompts displayed. Allow students quiet thinking time.
Teacher Says: "Good morning/afternoon, everyone! I am so excited to embark on a special journey with you today as we think about new beginnings. To start, let's get our brains warmed up with our Warm Up: Reflect & Connect . Just think about these questions; no need to write anything down just yet."
(Wait 2-3 minutes, then transition to partner talk.)
Teacher Says: "Now, turn to a partner and briefly share one thought from the warm-up that stood out to you. What did you think about?"
10 - 25 min
Reflecting on the Past
Teacher Says: "Now, let's dive into reflecting on the past year. Take a look at your Worksheet: My Growth Garden . We're going to think about our 'blossoms' and our 'weeds.' Your 'blossoms' are the things you did well, achieved, or are proud of. Your 'weeds' are the challenges you faced and what you learned from them."
Circulate while students work. If a student is stuck on a "weed," ask: "What's something that was hard for you this year? What did you do to get through it?"
25 - 40 min
Growth Mindset & Discussion
Teacher Says: "Before we share, let's talk about a growth mindset. Can anyone tell me in their own words what that means? ... Exactly! Your brain is like a muscle – the more you use it, the stronger it gets! Let's get into small groups and share one blossom and one weed."
(Refer to the Share Your Spark Discussion Guide for specific prompts during this phase.)
40 - 55 min
The SMART Roadmap
Teacher Says: "We've looked back, now let's look forward. We are going to make SMART intentions. S-M-A-R-T stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Let's make sure our seeds are strong enough to actually grow!"
55 - 60 min
Wrap-Up
Teacher Says: "Every day is a chance for a fresh start. Reflection helps us learn, and setting intentions gives us purpose. Please complete the Planting Seeds Cool Down before you leave. You've got this!"

"Who would like to share an interesting 'blossom' or 'weed' a group member discussed?"
"What was challenging about sharing your reflections? What felt good?"
Part 2: Whole Class Connection
Discussion Theme (8 min)
"Let's bring our ideas back together. Think about our discussion and what we know about a 'growth mindset'."
Q1: Reflection & Mindset
How does reflecting on our successes and challenges help us develop a growth mindset?
Q2: Fixed vs. Growth
Can you give an example of how someone with a fixed mindset might approach a resolution differently than someone with a growth mindset?
Q3: Resiliance
Why is it important to believe that you can learn and improve, even when things are difficult?
Probing Questions
"How would you define a 'growth mindset' in your own words?"
"How can we encourage each other to have a growth mindset when we are setting goals?"

Part 2
Individual Goal Setting (Student Work - 10 min)
Student Instructions:
01 Look at the "My New Year Intentions" section on your worksheet.
02 Brainstorm 1-3 positive intentions. Think about areas where you want to grow, learn, or improve.
03 For each intention, verify it is SMART . Is it Specific? Measurable? Achievable? Relevant? Time-bound?
04 Write your final SMART intentions clearly in the provided boxes on your worksheet.
Teacher Facilitation Tips
Circulate the room to help students narrow down vague goals (e.g., "get better at math" -> "practice multiplication tables for 10 minutes a day").
Encourage personal relevance—goals should be something they care about.
If a student finishes early, have them sketch a visual representation of one of their goals in the margin.
