Learning Objective
By the end of this lesson, kindergarten students will understand why and how to raise their hands before speaking and will practice raising hands in response to prompts to gain confidence in turn-taking.
The "Why"
Teaching hand-raising routines builds classroom order, supports respectful communication, and helps young learners develop patience and self-control when sharing ideas.

Introduction
Gather students on the carpet and show the Hand-Raising Poster. Ask: "Why do we raise our hands before we speak?" Elicit ideas (take turns, be heard, stay organized). Explain today’s goal: learning to raise hands and wait patiently.

Modeling the Skill
Model a scenario: ask "What is your favorite color?" without raising hand to show the chaos. Demonstrate proper hand-raising: sit up, raise hand high, wait quietly. Invite a volunteer to model alongside you. Praise correct posture and waiting.

Guided Practice
Small groups of 3-4. Use Scenario Cards. Students take turns as "Teacher" and "Speaker." Practice raising hands before speaking. Rotate roles. Circulate and give stickers for successful hand-raising.
5 MIN
Independent Practice
Reconvene whole class. Ask individual simple questions. Require volunteers to raise hands. Provide immediate praise and stickers for following the procedure correctly.

Reinforcement & Closing
Review steps: raise hand, wait, speak when called on. Display the poster. Encourage use throughout the day. Final sticker reinforcement.

Choose Your Roles
Pick who will be the Teacher , the Speaker , and the Listeners . Don't worry, you will all get a turn!

Draw a Card
The Speaker draws a card. Raise your hand high and wait for the Teacher to call your name before you read it.

Earn a Sticker
If you raised your hand and waited quietly, you get a sticker! Then, switch roles so everyone gets to practice.

Raise Your Hand
Use this rubric to assess each student’s ability to raise their hand and participate respectfully during class activities. Circle or record the score for each criterion, then total for an overall participation score.
Criterion 1 - Beginning 2 - Developing 3 - Proficient 4 - Exemplary Posture Slouches or faces away; hand not visible. Sits up sometimes; hand low or half-raised. Usually sits up straight; hand at shoulder level. Always sits tall, faces speaker; hand raised high and steady. Procedure Often calls out without hand raise. Sometimes waits, but may call out first. Raises hand before speaking most of the time. Consistently raises hand and models behavior for peers. Waiting Quietly Frequently interrupts or speaks out of turn.
