Warm-Up Question:
What does "professionalism" mean to you?
(Think: school, future jobs, everyday life)
Welcome students and introduce the day's topic: professionalism. Ask them what comes to mind when they hear the word. Encourage a quick brainstorm.
What is Professionalism?
It’s more than just a dress code. It’s how you act, speak, and present yourself.
It’s about demonstrating competence, reliability, and respect in any setting.
Why it Matters
- First Impressions
- Building Trust
- Opening Opportunities
Transition from their brainstorm to a more structured definition. Explain that professionalism isn't just about suits; it's about how we act and present ourselves.
01
Pillar 1:
Appearance Matters
School
Dress code alignment and cleanliness.
Interview
Smart, neat, and clean appearance.
Workplace
Following company guidelines.
The Question:
"Does my appearance show respect for the environment?"
Discuss appearance: what's appropriate for different situations? Emphasize that it's about being prepared and respectful of the context. No need for a uniform, but understand the expectations.
02
Pillar 2:
Communication Counts
Verbal
Clear language, active listening, and a respectful tone.
Non-Verbal
Eye contact, posture, and full attention.
Written
- Proper grammar & spelling
- Polite tone in emails/texts
- Professional sign-offs
Focus on communication. Highlight verbal and non-verbal cues. Give examples of professional vs. unprofessional communication in both spoken and written forms (emails, texts).
03
Pillar 3:
Etiquette & Reliability
Punctuality
Being on time, every time.
Reliability
Following through on tasks.
Accountability
Owning your actions.
Professionalism is a set of habits that show you respect others' time and your own commitments.
Discuss etiquette and responsibility. This covers things like punctuality, meeting deadlines, showing initiative, and owning up to mistakes.
