A 4-Minute Guided Emotional Regulation Practice
4 MINS SOFT VOICE SLOW PACE
Read this script slowly. Pause for 3-5 seconds wherever you see an ellipsis (...) or a line break. Keep your tone neutral, warm, and calm.
0:00 - Arrival
"Let's take a moment to pause and breathe. Find a position that feels comfortable for you. You might choose to rest your hands on your desk or in your lap. Close your eyes if you feel comfortable, or simply let your gaze rest softly on a spot on the floor in front of you... Bring your attention to your breathing, just as it is right now."
1:00 - The Breath
"Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose... and then gently exhale through your mouth. Feel the cool air filling your lungs, and notice the warmth as it leaves your body... Repeat this a few times at your own pace. Inhale... and exhale. Let your shoulders drop a little lower with every breath out."
2:00 - Observing
"As you continue to breathe slowly, notice any sensations or emotions that might be present right now. You don't need to change them or fix them. Imagine these feelings as cloud-like shapes passing through a wide, clear sky in your mind. Some clouds might be dark and heavy, others light and wispy... There's no need to hold onto them—just observe them as they drift by."
3:00 - Returning
"Now, gently bring your focus back to the sensation of your breath in your body. If your mind wanders to a thought or an emotion, that's okay. Simply acknowledge it without judgment... like naming a cloud... and return your attention to your breathing. Inhale... and exhale."
4:00 - Closing
"Let's take one last deep breath together. Inhale slowly... and exhale completely. When you feel ready, gently open your eyes or bring your focus back to the room. Take a moment to notice how you feel now, and carry this sense of calm with you as we move forward."
*Feel free to adjust the pace and wording to better fit the needs of your students. Your presence is the most important part of this practice.*

Emotional Regulation Check-In
Name:
Date:
Just like the weather outside changes, our "inner weather"—our emotions and feelings—shifts throughout the day. Use this sheet to notice and name your current weather.
1. Pre-Check: Right Now
How would you describe your current "inner weather"? Circle the weather icon that best matches your mood before we begin.
Sunny/Calm
Cloudy/Tired
Stormy/Angry
Rainy/Sad
What specific emotion are you feeling? (One word)
2. Post-Check: After Breathing
After our 4-minute practice, did your inner weather change? Describe any shifts you noticed.
My focus level now is...
Low Focus
High Focus
Remember:
You don't have to be "sunny" all the time. The goal is to notice the clouds, breathe, and let them pass through. You are the sky, not the weather.
