Teaching Guidance
1
Introduction & Centering
Opening Dialogue: Start by asking students: "How many of you felt rushed or stressed today?" Briefly define mindfulness as paying attention to the present moment on purpose and without judgment.
Guided Breathing: Use Slide 3 to lead the class. Have students sit comfortably, feet flat on the floor. Instruct them to close their eyes or lower their gaze.
Inhale slowly for a count of 4.
Hold for a count of 4.
Exhale slowly for a count of 6.
Repeat 3-4 times.
2
Mindful Listening Exercise
The Set-up: Use the Mindful Listening Activity Guide for specific prompts. The goal is to experience what it's like to be truly heard and what it's like to listen without planning a response.
Key Focus: Remind students that being a listener is an active role. Their job is to hold space for their partner. No nodding, no "uh-huhs," just silent, focused attention.
"Empathy is not about fixing or advising. It is simply about being present."
3
Reflective Discussion
Debrief Questions:
"Was it harder to speak for 2 minutes or to listen for 2 minutes? Why?"
"How did your body feel during the breathing exercise compared to now?"
"When in your school day could you use a 30-second 'mindful moment'?"
Closing: Encourage students to pick one 'trigger' (e.g., walking through a specific doorway, opening their laptop) that will remind them to take one deep, mindful breath today.

Mindful Listening Activity Guide Mindful Listening Activity
Facilitation Guide
This guide is designed to help you lead the mindful listening activity in the "Mindful Moments" lesson. Focus on creating a safe, non-judgmental space where students feel heard and respected.
Activity Setup
1
Pair Up Students
Organize students into pairs. Explain that one person will speak while the other listens intently without interrupting or reacting verbally.
2
Establish Guidelines
Encourage students to remain silent during their partner's turn. Emphasize that the goal is not to "solve" anything, but to be fully present with the speaker's words.
3
Setting the Vibe
Remind students of the importance of empathy and respect. This is an exercise in vulnerability and attention.
Activity Execution
Timing & Roles
Each round lasts 2 minutes . Use a timer that makes a soft sound when finished.
Round 1 Partner A Speaks
Round 2 Partner B Speaks
For the Speaker
Share a thought, experience, or feeling related to mindfulness or a calm moment.
Speak freely and authentically.
Don't worry about the listener's reactions or "filling the silence."
For the Listener
Focus entirely on the speaker. Avoid planning your own response.
Stay silent. Use eye contact or soft body language only.
Notice key points or feelings that resonate with you.
Reflection & Wrap-Up
After both rounds are complete, guide the students into a reflective discussion. You can facilitate this first in pairs, then as a whole class.
Personal Experience
How did it feel to express your thoughts without interruption? Was the silence from your partner comforting or challenging?
Empathy in Action
What did you notice about the experience of actively listening? Did you find your mind wandering to your own life, and how did you bring it back?
Challenges & Benefits
Were there any challenges in staying silent or fully attentive? How does this exercise help you feel more connected to your partner's experiences?
Application in Daily Life
How might these mindful listening skills be applied in everyday interactions (with friends, family, teachers) to enhance communication?
Closing the Session
Conclude by inviting students to share one insight they gained about themselves or their partner.
