WEEKLY PLANNING GUIDE
Vibrant mental health lesson plans, group activities, and pledges
Week 1 Focus
Plug Out & Connect (Social Connection)
Objective: Help students realize screens isolate us, and actively engage in warm, screen-free community building.
Advisory Lesson Activity (15 Mins): Pair students with peers they don't know well. Give them the Connection Cards to prompt informal, healthy screen-free conversation.
Group/School Challenge: "Device-Free Lunch Friday." Declare table huddles in the lunchroom. Provide card games or connection prompt sheets on dining tables.
Week 2 Focus
Somatic Stress-Busters (Nervous System Regulation)
Objective: Guide students to physically reset cortisol levels and calm an overstimulated nervous system.
Advisory Lesson Activity (15 Mins): Lead a quick demonstration of Box Breathing and a 1-minute somatic shakeout. Guide students to check their muscle tension and roll shoulders.
Group/School Challenge: Incorporate a "3-Breath Pause" in classrooms before quizzes, encouraging students to physical drop somatic distress.
Week 3 Focus
Radical Gratitude (Positive Cognition)
Objective: Shift attention away from standard brain negativity bias towards supportive, cooperative relationships.
Advisory Lesson Activity (15 Mins): Conduct the "Gratitude Trio" log. Have students write positive sticky notes to paste on peers' lockers or a mutual whiteboard.
Group/School Challenge: Construct a large "Affirmation Station" poster board in central school hallways. Invite all staff and students to leave anonymous thank-yous.
Week 4 Focus
The Wellness Pledge (Sustainability & Future-Self)
Objective: Help students establish highly tailored, summer-safe wellness actions and contact support frameworks.
Advisory Lesson Activity (15 Mins): Assist students in writing out their private Summer Wellness Pledge, outlining their sleep goals and their core circle of trusted contacts.
Group/School Challenge: Organize a lobby Pledge Banner where students sign initials, committing to prioritize mental resilience throughout the long holiday months.
Implementation Advice for Teachers
Mental Health Month activities are designed to be low-stakes, self-paced, and highly informal to reduce stigma and increase classroom safety. Let students opt out or participate quietly if overwhelmed. Do not grade the Mindful May Student Journals; grade them solely on optional completion. Utilize the Connection Cards during advisory circles, homerooms, or transition periods to let student well-being truly bloom.
