Mind Decompress Lesson Plan CBT Distress Tolerance
Mind Decompress Lesson Plan
Grades 9–12 • Group Counseling & Classroom Coping Skills
SESSION ID: MD-01
Duration: 45 Mins
Somatic Dashboard Concept
Teens often experience distress as sudden physical "system errors." This lesson frames the nervous system as a complex dashboard. By recognizing somatic alarm triggers (sweating, racing heart, muscle tension), students learn to deploy CBT & DBT tools (TIPP) to override physiological panic before it overwhelms executive functioning.
Materials Needed
Calm the Storm Slides (for presentation)
Somatic Sensor Worksheet (1 per student)
Heat of the Moment Cards (cut into sets)
Instant Chill Exit Ticket (1 per student)
Educator Prep
Review the TIPP skills clinical framework.
Print worksheets and exit tickets.
Cut scenario cards and place in envelopes for student pairs or small groups.
Pacing & Faciliation Flow
Time / Phase Key Activity & Instructor Role Objective / Goal 00–08 Mins Phase 1: Boot Up Welcome & Body Mapping: Introduce the "Somatic Dashboard." Guide students to map where stress physically manifests.Somatic awareness and group connection. 08–20 Mins Phase 2: System Specs Direct Instruction: Project the slide deck. Explain the biology of distress (Sympathetic Nervous System) and introduce TIPP override codes.Understand distress physiology & DBT options. 20–35 Mins Phase 3: Stress Test Scenario Practice: Distribute the "Heat of the Moment Cards." Small groups analyze scenarios to select the best "System Override."Application of distress tolerance in context.

Coping Strategies and Clinical Guidance for Teens
PHASE 1
Somatic Body Map (08 Mins)
Distribute the Somatic Sensor Worksheet . Instruct: "When you hit stress overload, your brain acts like a circuit breaker—it switches off logic and dials up physical body signals. Take 3 minutes to color or shade where you physically feel panic: your throat closing, chest tightening, palms sweating, or stomach churning."
Facilitator Check-in Tip: Ask the group: "If your stress was an emergency indicator light on a car dashboard, what color would it blink and what sound would it make?" This externalizes distress and lightens the tension.
PHASE 2
TIPP System Override Codes (12 Mins)
Walk through the Calm the Storm Slides . Explain that when the system is in "Alarm Mode," you cannot simply "think positive." You must use physiological interventions to shift from Sympathetic (alarm) to Parasympathetic (cool down):
T - Temperature: Change facial temperature with ice water or a cool cloth. This triggers the mammalian dive reflex to drop heart rate instantly.
I - Intense Exercise: Exert physical energy (jumping jacks, wall pushups) for 60 seconds to burn off excess cortisol.
P - Paced Breathing: Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 2, exhale for 6. Making the exhale longer than the inhale stimulates the vagus nerve.
P - Paired Relaxation: Tighten a muscle group (like shoulders) on the inhale, then release and say "Relax" on the exhale.
PHASE 3
Stress Test: Heat of the Moment (15 Mins)
Divide students into pairs. Provide each pair with a Heat of the Moment Card . Instruct pairs to analyze their scenario, identify the physical symptoms shown, and map out a TIPP or Cognitive override protocol. Instruct them to write their customized plan on their Somatic Sensor Worksheets.
COOL DOWN
Decompression Reflection (10 Mins)
Distribute the Instant Chill Exit Ticket . Have students reflect on which TIPP technique feels most realistic for their life. Guide them to cut out the "Pocket Override Card" to put in their phone case or pocket for on-the-go stress spikes.
Key Discussion Questions: "How does treating stress like a 'biological alert' change how you judge your feelings? Why is it easier to execute physiological coping skills than cognitive ones in high stress?"

PRZEGRZANIE SYSTEMU
Silny lęk nie rodzi się tylko w głowie. To pełny, fizyczny odruch Twojego współczulnego układu nerwowego. Twój mózg działa jak wyłącznik awaryjny, aktywując wskaźniki w całym ciele:
Alert 01
Gonitwa myśli lub szum informacyjny
Alert 02
Szybkie, kołaczące bicie serca
Alert 03
Ucisk w klatce i płytki oddech
Alert 04

T
Temperatura (Temperature)
Zimna woda na twarzy wyzwala odruch nurkowania u ssaków, natychmiast obniżając tętno.
I
Intensywny wysiłek (Intense Exercise)
Spal krążące w organizmie hormony stresu (kortyzol i adrenalinę) podczas 60 sekund szybkiego ruchu.
P
Spokojny oddech (Paced Breathing)
Wydech dłuższy niż wdech wysyła bezpośredni sygnał bezpieczeństwa do nerwu błędnego.
P
Relaksacja mięśni (Paired Relax)
Mocne napięcie mięśni, a następnie ich całkowite rozluźnienie, resetuje stan napięcia układu nerwowego.

Lęk działa jak przepięcie elektryczne, przełączając Twoje ciało z Trybu Bezpiecznego w Tryb Alarmowy . Zmapuj poniżej swoje somatyczne sygnały alarmowe i ustal kody obejścia systemu.
1 Część 1: Twoje Somatyczne Wskaźniki Alarmowe
Zaznacz fizyczne alerty, które Twoje ciało aktywuje podczas silnego stresu:
Głowa: Mgła mózgowa, natłok myśli lub ucisk w głowie Szczęka / Gardło: Zaciskanie zębów, gula w gardle Klatka piersiowa: Szybki, płytki oddech, uczucie ucisku Serce: Szybkie, kołaczące tętno, motyle w klatce piersiowej Żołądek: Nagły ból żołądka, ścisk lub mdłości Dłonie: Drżenie, zimne palce lub spocone dłonie

2 Część 2: Aktywne Alerty Systemowe (Diagnostyka Pisemna)
Jaki jest Twój najwcześniejszy fizyczny symptom rosnącego stresu?
Jakie sytuacje szkolne (testy, tłum) aktywują Twoje alarmy?
3 Część 3: Własny Protokół Obejścia (TIPP)
Ustal swój własny fizyczny kod obejścia do wykonania pod wpływem stresu:
T - Temperatura (Obejście Temperaturą)
Gdzie w szkole znajdziesz coś zimnego, by wywołać spadek tętna?
I - Intensywny Ruch (Obejście Ruchem)
