Checkpoint 1: The Attendance Streak
Ownership Secret #1
What Showing Up Does
Builds Brain Momentum
You never fall behind on team projects, lessons, or tests
You connect every day with friends and teachers.
Your brain locks in new skills through repetition.
🌟 Fact: Missing just 2 days a month adds up to 20 days a year!
The Ready-To-Roll Routine
Win the Morning the Night Before
1
Pack backpack, lunch, & supplies night before
2
Pick out & lay out clothes, socks, and shoes
3
Get 9–10 hours of solid sleep for peak energy
When you prepare early, showing up is easy!
Checkpoint 2: The Habit Engine
Ownership Secret #2
Great habits are not magic—they follow a 3-step loop!
Step 1
THE CUE
The daily reminder or trigger that starts the action.
Example: "Right after I unpack my backpack..."
Step 2
THE ROUTINE
The simple action you do every single time.
Example: "...I write homework tasks in my planner."
Step 3
THE WIN
The good feeling or celebration that locks it in.
Example: "...I feel calm and I say something positive about myself!"
When you repeat this loop for 14 days, it becomes your superpower!
Checkpoint 3: Your Power Goal
Ownership Secret #3
Fuzzy Wish (Hard to track)
"I want to do better in school."
⚠️ Too broad to know what to do today.
⚠️ No clear finish line or daily action.
⚠️ Easy to forget by lunchtime.
Power Goal (Clear & Actionable)
"I will practice math facts 10 min each day."
✅ You know exactly what action to take.
✅ You can count it and track your streak.
✅ It connects directly to your habit loop!

Habit Architecture
THE DAILY HABIT ENGINE
Small Daily Routines = Huge Results
Goals tell you where you want to go, but habits are the engine that drives you there. Map out your 3-step habit loop below:

Checkpoint 3: Build Your Daily Loop
1. The Cue (Trigger)
What daily event reminds you to start? (e.g., after-school snack, morning bell)

LEVEL UP QUEST: 30-MIN BLUEPRINT
Grades 4–5 • 30 Minutes Total
Core Objective
Students take ownership of their personal and academic growth by designing a quest avatar, examining attendance streaks, drafting one bite-sized Power Goal in Reading Power, Math Power, Organization, or Leadership, and engineering a daily habit loop.
Lesson Supplies
• Level Up Slides deck
• Roadmap Activity (2 pages)
• Pencils & coloring markers
Step-by-Step 30-Minute Pacing Schedule Keep transitions crisp!
0–5 Min
Hook: The Streak Mindset
Launch Slide 1 & 2 . Ask: "Who has an avatar or streak in a game? How does it feel to protect that streak?" Connect to daily attendance: showing up on time builds brain momentum, test readiness, and friendships.
5–12 Min
Direct Instruction: Habit Loop & Power Goals
Present Slides 3 & 4 . Walk through Cue → Routine → Win. Highlight the 4 goal arenas: Reading Power, Math Power, Organization, and Leadership . Contrast fuzzy wishes with specific daily power goals.
12–24 Min
Guided Practice: Avatar & Roadmap Work
Distribute Goal Quest Roadmap . Students sketch their Hero Avatar , check their night-before readiness habits, pick an arena (Reading Power, Math Power, etc.), write their 3-week Power Goal, and build their Habit Loop.
24–30 Min
Partner Check & Official Pledge
Display Slide 5 . Students turn to a neighbor, introduce their avatar hero, read their habit cue out loud, and sign each other's pledge as official witnesses. Close with a class chant: "Small daily habits, big future wins!"
Power Questions to Ask During Work
• "What makes your avatar unstoppable when school gets challenging?"
• "Can you do this daily routine in under 15 minutes?" (Prevents burnout)
• "What exact clock time or event triggers your habit loop?"
Differentiation Strategies
• Scaffold: Provide sentence starters for the Cue ("Right after I open my backpack at home, I will..." ).
• Extension: Have advanced students add a weekly check-in metric or create a mini habit tracker for a peer.

A Note from the School Counselor
Today, our 4th and 5th graders participated in a special 30-minute counseling lesson called Level Up Quest . We explored how showing up every day , building daily habit routines , and setting personal goals empower students to take full ownership of their success at Kemp Intermediate West!

20-Day Attendance Streak
A tracker where students color a daily star each morning they arrive on time, ready for projects, lessons, and tests.
One 3-Week Power Goal
Chosen in 1 of 4 arenas: Reading Power , Math Power , Organization , or Leadership .
3-Step Habit Loop
Mapped with a daily Cue (trigger), Routine (bite-sized action), and Win (positive self-celebration).

3 Power Moves for Families at Home
1. Evening Launchpad
Help them pack their backpack, lunch, and supplies, and set out clothes, socks, and shoes before bed.
Eliminates morning stress!
2. 9–10 Hour Sleep
4th and 5th grade brains need solid rest to stay focused. A consistent bedtime powers up their next morning alarm.
Sharpens test focus!
3. Celebrate the Win
Praise small effort over perfection. Ask them to share their daily positive self-talk phrase when they practice their habit!
Locks in daily pride!

Counselor Briefing for Homeroom & Subject Teachers
Our 4th and 5th graders just completed their Level Up Quest counseling session. Every student created a Hero Avatar , pledged to an Attendance Readiness Streak , drafted one 3-Week Power Goal (in Reading Power, Math Power, Organization, or Leadership), and built a 3-Part Habit Loop . Here is how we can amplify their ownership with zero extra prep time!
1
The 60-Second Daily Streak Ritual
Zero Prep
Morning Desk Routine (60 Sec):
Keep the 2-page Goal Quest Roadmap in students' daily homeroom folders. Each morning after unpacking, give 60 seconds to color their daily star on their 20-Day Streak Tracker.
Milestone Celebrations (Days 5, 10, 15, 20):
Recognize consistency with quick high-fives, table cheers, or line-leader privileges. Celebrating small streaks reinforces that showing up every day is the real victory.
2
Classroom Cueing: "Say This, Not That"
Instead of: "Did you do your homework last night?"
Say: "Did your habit cue fire after school yesterday?"
Instead of: "You need to get better grades this nine weeks."
Say: "What bite-sized Power Goal action are you doing today?"
Instead of: "Don't miss class or be late tomorrow."
Say: "Protect your attendance streak—your team needs you!"
Handling "Boss Battles" (Obstacles)
When a student misses a day, forgets supplies, or feels stuck, avoid frustration. Ask:
"Check your roadmap: What was your If-Then counter-move for this obstacle?"
This reinforces problem-solving and agency over defeat.
2-Week Check-in Protocol
Every student has an accountability partner witness signed on Page 2 with a 2-week date:
• Give 3 minutes for partners to review each other's streak stars.
• Ask: "Did your routine work, or do you need to tweak your cue?"
