Students will synthesize semester learning by writing a letter forecasting how they will use SEL skills in middle school.

0-5 MIN: THE PROMPT
Say: "Think back to the beginning of 5th grade. How have you grown? In a few months, you'll be walking into a middle school. New hallways, new teachers, new challenges. Today, we're writing a message to the person you'll be on that first day."
Facilitator Note: Use Slide 2 to highlight that middle school requires higher levels of independence and social management.
5-10 MIN: THE PLAN
Say: "Before we write, let's pick our 'Tools for Success.' Look at your Future Letter Plan. Which SEL skills will you need most? Managing stress before a test? Finding a way to join a new group at lunch? Resolving a conflict with a friend?"
Facilitator Note: Circulate the room and help students identify 2-3 specific SEL skills they want to focus on for their letter.
10-25 MIN: THE LETTER
Say: "Now, write your letter. This isn't just a 'hello.' It's a forecast. Tell your future self exactly how you plan to use these skills. 'When I feel nervous about my new locker, I will use my deep breathing technique.' Be specific!"
Encourage a quiet atmosphere. Play some soft background music to help focus.
25-30 MIN: SHARE & SEAL
Say: "Does anyone want to share one 'growth goal' or skill they mentioned? (Take 2-3 volunteers). Now, fold your letters. We are sealing these in our time capsule. You'll open these next year when you're officially middle schoolers."
QUICK TIPS FOR SUCCESS:
Remind students that these letters are private and will not be graded for grammar.
Focus on "IF/THEN" statements: IF I get frustrated, THEN I will...
Collect letters in a decorated "Time Capsule" box to build excitement.
