Hook: The Time Machine
Say: "Class, imagine we have a time machine. In just a few months, you're going to step out of it and find yourself in middle school. New hallways, new teachers, and new challenges. Today, we're going to send a message forward in time to help that 'future you' succeed."
Action: Show Slide 1 & 2. Ask students to close their eyes for 10 seconds and picture themselves walking into their first day of 6th grade.
3-10 MINS
Brainstorm: Your SEL Toolkit
Say: "Before we write, we need a plan. Think about the SEL skills we've practiced this semester: staying calm during a test, working in a group, or making a tough choice. Which one of these will be your 'superpower' in middle school?"
Action: Show Slides 3 & 4. Distribute the Future Letter Plan . Give students 5 minutes to jot down their thoughts.
"If you see a student stuck, ask: 'Remember that time you handled a disagreement at recess? How could that same skill help you make new friends next year?'"
10-25 MINS
Writing: The Letter
Say: "Now, it's time to write. This letter is private. It’s a pep talk from you, to you. Tell your future self what you're proud of right now and one specific goal you have for 6th grade."
Action: Distribute the Letter Template . Play soft, focused music. Circulate to offer support, but give them space for honest reflection.
Prompts: "I want you to remember...", "When you feel overwhelmed, try...", "One thing I hope you achieve is..."
25-30 MINS
Closing: Seal the Future
Say: "Does anyone want to share just ONE goal they wrote down? Not the whole letter, just one thing you're looking forward to." (Take 2-3 volunteers).
Action: Have students fold their letters and put them in envelopes.
"Seal your envelope. We will keep these safe until the end of the year, or you can take them home to open on your first day of middle school. You are ready for what's next!"
