Inner Thermometer Lesson Plan SEL Lesson Plan Grades 2–3 45–50 Mins
CASEL: Self-Awareness & Self-Management
The Inner Thermometer: Body Cues & Calming Tools
Guiding students to detect somatic escalation signals before reaching crisis levels and practice proactive reset habits.
Learning Objectives
• Identify at least 2 physical body signals that happen when big feelings heat up.
• Categorize physical sensations into 3 zones: Cool (Blue), Warm (Yellow), and Boiling (Red).
• Select a proactive "Yellow Zone" calming strategy before reaching the "Red Zone."
Materials Needed
Inner Thermometer Slides for direct instruction
Body Clues Warm Up sheet (1 per student)
Calm Meter Worksheet & coloring pencils/crayons
Reset Routine Cool Down exit slips and scissors
Instructional Arc (45–50 Minutes)
1 Warm-Up: Detective Body Scan
8–10 Mins
Distribute the Body Clues Warm Up . Guide learners through a 60-second seated body scan. Ask students to place a hand on their chest and notice their heart rate and shoulder tension.
Script Prompt: "Detectives, our bodies send us text messages before our brains even realize we are mad or worried! Let's check our pulse and see what clues our bodies have right now."
2 Mini-Lesson: The 3 Zones of the Inner Thermometer
12–15 Mins
Display the Inner Thermometer Slides . Introduce the 3 zones:
Cool Zone (Blue) Shoulders loose, breathing slow, mind ready to learn.
Warm Zone (Yellow) Teeth clenched, tummy butterflies, quick breath. Catch it here!
Boiling Zone (Red) Pounding heart, fists tight, shouting or crying. Hard to think.
3 Guided Practice: Calm Meter Mapping
12–15 Mins
Distribute the Calm Meter Worksheet . Model identifying personal yellow-zone triggers and physical signals (e.g., foot bouncing, clenched fists). Guide students to pair each physical clue with a calming tool (e.g., 4-square breathing, muscle squeeze, cold drink of water).

4 Cool-Down & Reset Routine Exit Ticket
8–10 Mins
Have students complete the Reset Routine Cool Down exit slip. Guide the entire class through the tactile "5-Finger Breathing" exercise illustrated on the sheet. Students write their one go-to Yellow Zone tool and cut out their desk reminder card.
Key Teaching Takeaway: Reiterate that being in the Yellow or Red Zone is never bad or wrong —all emotions are healthy information. The goal is noticing early so we keep ourselves and classmates safe!
Common Student Misconceptions
"Hot feelings mean I am bad."
Clarify: Anger and frustration are natural alarms. What we do with that energy is where our choices matter.
"I can jump from Red directly to Blue."
Clarify: Cooling down takes time. It often goes Red → Yellow → Blue step by step.
Guiding Discussion Prompts
"What is the very first thing your body does when you feel annoyed or left out?"
"Why is it much easier to cool off in the Yellow Zone than after we reach the Red Zone?"
"What can a friend or teacher do when they notice you are in the Yellow Zone?"
Differentiation & Scaffolding
Support / Tier 2
Provide pre-cut cue icons or picture choices for non-writers. Allow students to point to body parts rather than labeling them in writing.
Multilingual Learners
Use color coding consistently (Blue, Yellow, Red). Pair verbal cues with physical gestures (e.g., deep breath, clenching and releasing fists).
Extension / Fast Finishers
Have students create a comic strip showing a character noticing their yellow-zone signal and using their calming tool to solve a recess disagreement.
Formative Assessment Checkpoints
Body Awareness: Student can name at least one personal somatic signal (e.g., tight chest, clenched jaw) on the worksheet.
Proactive Regulation: Student selects a viable Yellow Zone calming tool on the exit ticket and demonstrates 5-finger breathing.
