1 Check-In & Warm-Up: Brain Warm-Up
5 MINUTES
Goal: Prime students to understand that their minds require stretching and training, just like physical muscles.
Teacher Script & Actions: "Athletes! Welcome to Mental Coach Camp. Before we run, we stretch. Sit tall, roll your shoulders, and take one slow deep breath in... and out. Our brains have an inner monologue—a voice inside that talks to us all day. Sometimes that voice helps us, and sometimes it trips us up. Today, we're training that voice to become our ultimate Inner Coach!"
2 Introduce & Analyze: Critic vs. Coach
10 MINUTES
Goal: Define the "Inner Critic" (fixed mindset/negative) and "Inner Coach" (growth mindset/positive).
The Inner Critic:
The voice that yells, "You missed! You're terrible at this! Just give up." It focuses purely on mistakes and makes us feel defeated.
The Inner Coach:
The voice that says, "Tough break, but you can practice and get it. Focus on the next play." It is encouraging, helpful, and focused on growth.
Key Lesson Anchor: Introduce Cognitive Reframing as the "Thought Switch." Teach the three coach filters: 1. Is it true? 2. Is it helpful? 3. Is it kind? If a thought fails these, we switch the play!

Phase 3, 4 & 5 Execution Plans
3 Interactive Activity: Thought-Switching Playbook
15 MINUTES
Activity: Students work in pairs with the Thought-Switching Scenarios card board. They analyze cards with Critic statements and run a "playbook reframe."
Step 1: Distribute Scenario Boards & Card Sheets to pairs. Students cut out cards.
Step 2: Match the "Critic Statement" cards to the corresponding situation on the game board.
Step 3: Together, write a reframed "Coach Call" directly on the space provided to complete the play.
Teacher Tip: Walk around and listen. Encourage concrete, realistic positive self-talk over toxic positivity (e.g., "I can practice more" vs. "I am perfect at this").
4 Reflection & Journaling: My Playbook
10 MINUTES
Goal: Personalize the learning by documenting their personal Inner Critic and establishing their Inner Coach.
Instructions: Direct students to complete the My Inner Coach Playbook worksheet independently. They will draw their "Mental Uniform", write a persistent Critic thought they struggle with, and draft their Personal Coach Anthem (a key positive phrase they can repeat when things get tough).
5 Closing Circle: The Team Cheer
5 MINUTES
Goal: Consolidate understanding, share reframed thoughts, and build a positive, supportive community of practice.
Facilitator Action: Gather students in a circle. Ask each student to share one "Coach Call" phrase. Wrap up with a unified team chant: "We train our brains, we win our games! Go Coaches!"
Pro Coach Tips (Teacher Notes)
Handling Vulnerability
Some students may feel vulnerable sharing negative self-talk. Never force a student to read their written "Critic" statement aloud. Focus sharing on the "Reframed Coach Calls."
Integration Strategy
Keep the whistle/coaching motif alive during academic struggles. If a student gets frustrated with math, blow an imaginary whistle and shout: "Time-out! What is your Inner Coach saying?"

The Two Voices in Your Head
The Inner Critic
DEFEATS US
The voice that yells, "You messed up! You're terrible at this! Just give up." It focuses completely on the mistakes and gets us stuck.
Makes us feel heavy, scared, and ready to quit.
The Inner Coach
BUILDS US UP
The voice that says, "Tough play, but you can practice and get it. Keep trying!" It focuses on learning, growing, and the next effort.
Makes us feel strong, capable, and ready to learn.
Which voice did you use today? Slide 2 of 6
The "Thought Switch" Play
Cognitive Reframing means changing how we look at a tough situation.
We flick the "thought switch" from Critic to Coach!
Critic Voice
"I made a mistake, so I am completely bad at this."
SWITCH PLAY
Coach Voice
"Mistakes help me learn. I'll get it with practice!"
Reframing doesn't lie; it focuses on growth and the truth! Slide 3 of 6
The 3 Coach Filter Rules
1
Is it TRUE?
Am I actually bad at everything, or did I just make one single slip-up? Look at the hard facts.
2
Is it HELPFUL?
Does telling myself "I can't do this" give me energy, or does it make me want to walk away?
3
Is it KIND?
Would I ever speak like this to my best friend? If not, then don't say it to yourself!
If a thought fails any filter, run a thought switch play! Slide 4 of 6
Active Practice: Switch the Play!
The Live Match Situation
"You are practicing spelling. You got 5 out of 10 words wrong on today's practice card. The Inner Critic speaks..."
The Critic's Scream:
"You are terrible at spelling. You'll never pass the real quiz on Friday!"
Brainstorm: Coach's Call
How can your Inner Coach reframe this statement? Think about progress and action!
Let's hear some student suggestions!
Tip: A Coach doesn't ignore facts—they focus on practice! Slide 5 of 6
