Essential Questions
"How does my body tell me when big feelings arrive? What can I do to feel safe and calm again?"
Core Vocabulary (Kid-Friendly)
Weather Inside: feelings that change. Body Signal: clues like fast heartbeat. Calm Power: breathing tool.
Step-by-Step Instructional Sequence
1. Hook & Check-In: The Weather Report (8 min)
Circle Time
Display Slide 1-2. Introduce the metaphor: Just like the sky outside has rain, sun, wind, and thunder, our bodies have feelings weather that changes all day long.
Teacher Script: "Put your hand on your heart and close your eyes. What is your weather right now? Are you sunny and calm, or is there a little rain or wind? In our classroom, all kinds of weather are welcome."
2. Body Clue Detective Hunt (10 min)
Slides 3
Guide students to recognize where emotions show up physically before words are spoken. Have children stand up and freeze-pose: "Show me a mad body" (tight fists, clenched jaw, furrowed brows), then "Show me a calm body" (loose shoulders, soft breath).
Key Takeaway: When our body gets tight or fast, it's ringing an alarm bell telling us: "Time to pick a calming tool!"
3. The 4 Calm Superpowers Lab (15 min)
Slides 4-7
Teach each strategy through direct modeling, whole-group choral movement, and sensory check-ins:
• Balloon Breath: Deep diaphragmatic breathing. Hands expand on stomach; slow "ssss" release.
• Starfish Finger Trace: Tactile 5-count breathing. Slow tracing creates sensory grounding.
• Lemon Squeeze: Progressive muscle relaxation. Tighten fists for 3s, drop like jelly.
• Butterfly Tap: Bilateral shoulder tapping. Calms the nervous system and re-centers focus.
