Exploring Emotions & Connection
Audience
Grades 3-7 Students
Time
30 Minutes
Objective
Enhance emotional vocabulary & empathy
Why This Activity?
This activity creates a visual representation of how our feelings connect us. By sharing personal emotions tied to a string, students build a collective "spiderweb" that fosters a supportive classroom environment. It helps students expand their emotional vocabulary and recognize that they are not alone in their experiences.

Large ball of yarn (bright color recommended)
-
Discussion Questions Guide
-
Reflection Worksheets (one per student)
-
A clear floor space for the circle
Instructional Steps
1
Introduction to Emotions
5 Mins
- Begin with a brief discussion on emotions and why it's important to talk about them.
- Ask students to shout out a few emotions they've felt this week.
- Explain the activity: We are going to build a physical web that shows how our feelings connect us.
2
The Spiderweb Activity
15 Mins
- Have students sit in a large circle on the floor.
- The teacher starts by holding the ball of yarn, sharing an emotion and a brief "why."
- Hold onto the end of the yarn and gently toss the ball to someone across the circle.
- The recipient shares their emotion, holds onto their piece of the yarn, and tosses the ball again.
- Continue until every student is holding a piece of the interconnected web.
3
Reflection and Discussion
10 Mins
- While still holding the web, use the Discussion Questions to guide a conversation.
- Once finished, have students gently lower the web to the floor to see the intricate pattern they've made together.
- Distribute the Reflection Worksheet for individual processing.

Guiding the Conversation
While students are still holding their piece of the yarn, use these prompts to facilitate a group discussion. Encourage students to look at the web they've created as they speak.
1
How did it feel to share your emotion with the group?
Facilitation Tips:
- Encourage students to think about their comfort level and any challenges they faced.
- Was it easier or harder than expected?
- How did it feel to be holding the yarn while talking?
2
What did you learn about your classmates' emotions?
Facilitation Tips:
- Guide students to consider the diversity of emotions and experiences shared.
- Did anyone share an emotion that surprised you?
- Did anyone share something that you also felt recently?
3
How can understanding others' emotions help us in our daily lives?
Facilitation Tips:
- Discuss the importance of empathy and emotional awareness in building relationships.
- Look at the web — how does it represent our classroom community?
- How can we support each other when we know how everyone is feeling?
The Web Drops
To conclude the discussion, ask everyone to gently lower their piece of yarn to the floor at the same time. Have them stand and look down at the intricate pattern. Remind them that even though the strings are now on the floor, the connections they made are still there.
