Step-by-Step Instructions
1
Introduction to Emotional Resilience
5 Minutes
Open with a brief definition: Resilience is the ability to "bounce back" from difficult situations.
Ask for volunteers: "What is a small challenge you faced this week? How did you handle it?"
Introduce the Tree Metaphor : Roots represent the things that hold us down or the challenges we face. Branches represent how we reach out, grow, and cope.
2
Creating the Resilience Tree
15 Minutes
Distribute the Resilience Tree Worksheet .
The Roots: Ask students to write or draw personal challenges in the roots. These can be school stress, friendship issues, or personal fears.
The Branches: Have them illustrate or list coping strategies in the branches. Examples: deep breathing, talking to a friend, drawing, or playing sports.
Encourage creativity: Let them use colors that represent their feelings.
3
Reflection and Sharing
10 Minutes
Use the Reflection Guide to facilitate a group discussion.
Encourage students to share one "branch" (strategy) they are proud of.
Wrap up by reinforcing that everyone's tree is different, and that's what makes us strong.

Reflection Discussion Guide
"Resilience is not just about surviving; it's about finding ways to thrive despite the storms. Use these questions to explore the forest of experiences in our room today."
1
What challenges did you identify as roots?
Think about different areas of your life—school, home, friendships, or even inner feelings. How did it feel to see those challenges written down?
Facilitator Tip
Validate that everyone faces "storms" and that naming our challenges is the first step toward handling them with strength.
2
What coping strategies did you illustrate as branches?
Which strategies do you use most often? Are there any "new branches" you'd like to try growing?
Facilitator Tip
Encourage students to borrow "branches" from each other. If one student uses drawing to cope, another might find that inspiring!
3
How does recognizing your tree help you build resilience?
When you look at your whole tree—roots and branches together—what do you notice about your growth?
Facilitator Tip
Focus on the connection: without the roots (challenges), we wouldn't have the opportunity to grow strong branches (strategies).
Remember: Every tree in the forest deals with different weather. Sharing our strategies helps us all stay standing.
