Counselor Debrief Question: "Unlike our heartbeat or digestion, we can consciously control our breathing. How does slowing our breath physically send a 'safety message' to our brain?"
Domain: Muscle Tension Zones & Kinetic Energy
Part 2 of 3 CARDS 03 & 04
CUT CARD 03
GAME 03
Target: Jaw clenching, raised shoulders, locked knees, and fist curling
👥 Trios • ⏱️ 10 Mins
Mission: When threatened or overwhelmed, our muscles secretly "armor up." Detectives spot where tension locks up in partners during common peer conflicts.
1 The Stance Lock
Actor reads a confrontation prompt and tenses exactly two body zones (e.g., shoulders up to ears + locked fists).
2 Tension Detector
Partner 2 identifies the two armor zones without touching. Partner 3 guesses the underlying feeling.
3 The Release Drop
On cue "Soft Armor," actor drops shoulders, opens palms, and unclamps jaw. Notice the instant calm!
The Jaw Clench Teeth grinding, pressed lips = Suppressed anger, holding back sharp words.
The Shoulder Ear-Hugs Shoulders creeping toward ears = Acute stress, feeling judged or unsafe.
The Locked White-Knuckles Tight fists or gripping desk edge = Loss of control, panic or urge to fight.
Counselor Debrief Question: "Where do you hold stress in your own body? If you unclench your jaw right now, what happens to your thoughts?"
Cut along dashed line to separate cards
CUT CARD 04
GAME 04
Target: Foot-tapping, pacing, clothing tugging, hair twisting, and rocking
👥 Pairs • ⏱️ 10 Mins
Mission: Movement is body communication! Students decode whether repetitive kinetic movements signal anxiety, boredom, sensory regulation, or eagerness.
1 Fidget Mimic
Actor receives a kinetic motion (e.g., bouncing knee rapidly while shredding a paper corner).
2 Need Deduction
Partner determines the body's underlying unmet need: Is it Discharging Nervous Energy or Seeking Stimulation?
3 Supportive Match
Suggest one healthy replacement tool (e.g., foot band, weighted lap pad, or brief water-break walk).
Bouncing Knee / Tapping Fight-or-flight motor primed; needs large muscle movement or fidget strap.
Skin / Cuticle Picking Internal sensory overwhelm or self-soothing attempt under intense focus.
Slumping & Head Propping Cognitive fatigue, sensory shutdown, or emotional withdrawal.
Counselor Debrief Question: "Why is it important not to just say 'stop fidgeting!' to someone? How is their body trying to help them cope?"
Domain: Thermal Shifts & Early Intervention Alarms
Part 3 of 3 CARDS 05 & 06
CUT CARD 05
GAME 05
Target: Hot ears, red cheeks, cold clammy hands, and sudden chills
👥 Pairs • ⏱️ 10 Mins
Mission: Our autonomic nervous system rushes blood to our face, ears, or limbs depending on threat level. Students connect thermal changes to social states.
1 Thermal Clue Pick
Actor picks a card: "Blazing Red Ears," "Cold Icy Fingertips," or "Sudden Shivering Chill."
2 Social Trigger Match
Partner matches the sensation to the social situation (e.g., called on in class unprepared vs. hearing a scary rumor).
3 Thermal Countermeasure
Pair chooses a sensory intervention: Cool water on wrists for overheating; rubbing palms for icy freeze.
Blushing Cheeks & Neck Acute embarrassment, feeling spotlighted, or suppressed resentment.
Cold Clammy Hands Blood rushing inward to major organs for fight/flight; dread or stage fright.
Sudden Thermal Spike Explosive anger or righteous indignation; urge to push back or yell.
Counselor Debrief Question: "When your cheeks get hot during an embarrassing moment, how does acknowledging it out loud take away its power?"
Cut along dashed line to separate cards
CUT CARD 06
GAME 06
Target: Catching subtle body signals before full emotional flooding
👥 Small Group (3-5) • ⏱️ 12 Mins
Mission: Emotions start as a "Whisper" (subtle body signal), grow to a "Talk" (conscious mood), and end as a "Scream" (meltdown). Students practice catching the whisper early!
1 Whisper Card Draw
Draw a subtle "Whisper Signal" (e.g., slight foot tap, slight dry mouth, tight forehead).
2 Predict The Scream
Team predicts what the Level 4 "Scream" would be if this signal is ignored for 30 minutes.
3 Micro-Intervention
Create a 15-second "Stealth Coping Tool" students can do at their desk without drawing attention.
THE BODY WHISPER (LEVEL 1) THE BODY SCREAM (LEVEL 4) 15-SEC STEALTH TOOL
Slight jaw tension Yelling / Slamming desk Tongue pressed to roof of mouth
Fidgety shallow breathing Panic attack / Fleeing room 4-7-8 finger tracing breath
Heavy eyelids / Slouching Complete task refusal Cold water drink + shoulder roll
Counselor Debrief Question: "Why is it 10 times easier to calm your body down when it is whispering than when it is screaming? How can partners support each other's early warning cues?"
Detective Clue: "Check the breath: Did a close call just end with an exhale, or are you freezing on the spot?"
