Mission Steps
1
Connect: Hard vs. Smart
10 MIN
Introduce the concept: Begin by asking students: "What's the difference between working hard and working smart ?"
Brainstorm: Facilitate a brief class discussion. Record responses on the board. Guide them to recognize that while effort is crucial, strategy helps direct that effort effectively.
Introduce the lesson: Explain that today they will discover how combining effort with smart strategies can make them academic superheroes.
2
Explore: Brain Growth
15 MIN
Present key concepts: Use the Dynamic Duo Slides to explain:
Productive Struggle: How challenges help our brains grow stronger.
Effective Effort: It's not just about trying, but how we try.
Strategy vs. Effort: The fuel (effort) vs. the map (strategy).
Learning from Mistakes: Mistakes are valuable clues, not failures.
Interactive examples: Share simple scenarios (solving a puzzle, learning a sport) and ask students to identify effort vs. strategy.
3
Practice: Strategy Menu
15 MIN
Introduce the activity: Distribute the Strategy Menu Activity . Explain they will brainstorm strategies for when they get stuck on a math problem.
Group work: Small groups or pairs fill out their "Strategy Menu." Encourage diverse categories (asking help, visualization, simplification).
Share out: Bring the class back together to share. Record a "Class Power Menu" on a large chart or board.
4
Reflect: Mission Commitment
5 MIN
Individual commitment: Distribute the Stuck Solution Worksheet . Ask students to choose one new strategy from their menu to commit to this week.
Exit Ticket: Students write down their strategy and why it will help. Collect as an exit ticket.
Reinforce: Effort is your power, strategy is your guide!
Dynamic Duo Slides Effort:
A Superpower
Effort + Strategy = 💪 Brain Growth!
Teacher Notes: Welcome students and introduce the exciting idea that effort is a superpower! Emphasize the equation: Effort + Strategy = Brain Growth.
Hard vs. Smart
Working Hard
Putting in a lot of time and energy .
🏃💨
Working Smart
Using good plans and methods to make your effort count.
🧠✨
Teacher Notes: Pose the question to the class and facilitate a brief discussion. Encourage students to think about examples of each. Guide them to see that 'working hard' is about putting in time and energy, while 'working smart' means using good plans and methods.
Productive Struggle
"When something feels tough, your brain is actually growing!"
Struggle isn't bad – it's your brain getting stronger!
🏋️♂️
STRETCH YOUR MIND!
🏋️♀️
Teacher Notes: Explain 'productive struggle.' Use an analogy like lifting weights to get stronger. When learning is challenging, your brain is actually building new connections. Reassure them that feeling 'stuck' is part of learning.
Effective Effort
It's not just how much you try...
It's HOW you try!
1
Trying a NEW way
2
Asking for specific help
3
Thinking about your plan
Teacher Notes: Discuss how 'effective effort' means applying effort in a way that truly helps. It's not just repeating the same mistake, but changing your approach. Ask for examples of how they might use effort effectively.
Strategy is Your Map!
🏔️
Effort
The energy you put into climbing a mountain.
🗺️
Strategy
Having a map and choosing the best path !
Both are essential for reaching the top!
Teacher Notes: Clarify the relationship: effort is the fuel, strategy is the map. You need both to reach your learning goals. Give an example like building a tower – effort is putting blocks, strategy is deciding where to put them.
Mistakes = Stepping Stones
They are not failures . They show us what we need to learn next and help our brains grow even more.
