Tier 3 Individual Support
1
Introduction & Setting the Stage (3 mins)
Teacher Notes: Welcome the parent warmly. Acknowledge the courage it takes to seek support and validate their feelings about dealing with defiance.
"Welcome! Thank you for coming today. I know that dealing with defiant behavior from a 7-year-old can be incredibly challenging and, at times, really frustrating. You are definitely not alone in this experience."
"The fact that you're here shows how much you care about your daughter and want to create a more peaceful home environment. Today, we're going to demystify some of that defiance. We'll explore why 7-year-olds might act out and, most importantly, we'll go over practical strategies you can start using right away."
"Take a look at our first slide, Defiance Demystified. We're going to dive into understanding this behavior and equipping you with tools."
2
Understanding Defiance (4 mins)
Teacher Notes: Encourage the parent to share their experiences briefly. Connect their experiences to the common reasons for defiance shown on the slides.
"Before we jump into solutions, let's talk a bit about why a 7-year-old might be defiant. Sometimes, it can feel like they're just trying to push our buttons, right? But often, there's more to it than that."
"If you look at Slide 2: Why Do Kids Defy?, you'll see some common reasons. For a 7-year-old, a big one is often seeking independence. They're growing up, wanting to do things their way. They might also be testing boundaries."
"On Slide 3: Defiance = Communication, we really drive home that point. What do you think your daughter might be trying to tell you when she's being defiant? Have you noticed any patterns?"
[Listen and Validate Parent Input]
"That's a really insightful observation. When we can understand the root cause, it helps us respond more effectively."
3
Strategy 1: Connect Before You Correct (4 mins)
Teacher Notes: Introduce the strategy. Provide a clear example and then invite the parent to role-play a scenario, focusing on the 'connect' part first.
"Our first strategy is 'Connect Before You Correct.' Think of it like building a bridge before you ask someone to cross it. When a child is defiant, our instinct is to immediately correct the behavior. But first, they need to feel seen."
"As you can see on Slide 4, this means empathy first—acknowledging their feelings. It's not about agreeing with the defiance, but with the emotion behind it."
"Let's try a quick role-play. Imagine your daughter is refusing to put on her shoes because she wants to wear her sandals, even though it's cold. How might you try to connect with her feelings before trying to correct her choice?"
