The Thought Filter — Challenge Negative Thoughts
Hot Thoughts (Anger)
"They are doing that on purpose to ruin my day!"
"I can't stand them. I'm going to yell something rude at them!"
Makes heart beat fast • Outburst risk
The Cool Filter
1. Is it 100% true?
2. Am I mind-reading?
3. Can I control them?
4. Is this annoying or a disaster?
5. What is the calm truth?
Cool Thoughts (Neutral)
"They are being loud or silly, but they are in their own space."
"I don't like the noise, but I can keep focus on my space safely."
Lowers heart rate • Keeps you safe
3
Circle of Control — Choose Your Focus
Outside My Control
I must accept these as they are right now:
- How loud my classmate talks or moves
- What faces they make or where they look
- If they make silly mistakes or go off topic
- How other people react around them
Acceptance Mantras (Pick One):
• "I don't have to react. I can let it go."
• "Their choices are theirs; my peace is mine."
• "I don't have to like their choices to stay calm."
Inside My Control
I own these completely. This is my strength:
- How I use my hands, feet, and posture
- The silent thoughts I think to stay regulated
- Taking slow, quiet breaths to calm down
- Quietly asking an adult for a break if needed
Power Mantras (Pick One):
• "I control my own reactions."
• "I am in charge of my mind and body."
• "My energy belongs to my choices."

Mind Shield Teacher Guide
MIND SHIELD FACILITATION GUIDE
CBT & DBT Implementation Protocol for Educators
Target Range: Grades 2–8
Evidence-Based Clinical Frameworks
This intervention pairs Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) cognitive restructuring with Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) distress tolerance. When a student becomes agitated by a peer, their sympathetic nervous system triggers a fight-or-flight response. This guide helps you teach the student to override automatic negative thoughts (ANTs), radically accept uncontrollable peer behaviors, and deploy rapid tactile/physiological calming mechanisms right at their desk.
Step-by-Step Training Protocol (Before Taping)
A
Introduce & De-stigmatize (10 Mins)
Review the chart in a 1-on-1 calm setting. Explain that a "Mind Shield" isn't a punishment; it is a mental superpowers card designed to protect their focus and energy from outside distractions.
B
Model & Role-Play "Hot" vs. "Cool" (15 Mins)
Simulate a minor trigger (e.g., pen clicking). Ask: "What is your Hot Thought?" ("He's trying to bug me!"). Practice filtering it to a Cool Thought ("He's just clicking, I can choose my focus"). Practice the tactile hand grip and quiet square breathing.
C
Co-Sign & Secure to Desk (5 Mins)
Have the student write their name and write down their specific target "My Zone" goal (e.g., "Math focus" or "Independent work"). Tape the chart securely to the top-right corner of their desk with heavy clear packing tape.
Real-Time Verbal Prompts (When Agitation Rises)
Low-Level Agitation Prompts
Whisper privately to the student:
- "Let's put on your Mind Shield right now. Keep a still body."
- "Can you trace your desk square? Take two silent breaths."
- "What is the Cool Thought on your chart for this?"
Radical Acceptance Prompts
When a peer is behaving disruptively:
- "Look at Step 3 on your card. Is that inside or outside your circle?"
- "Remember, we can't change their choices. We choose our peace."
- "Press your feet flat on the floor. Hold onto your desk anchor."
Reinforcement & Progress Monitoring
1. Daily Check-In
Spend 1 minute every morning pointing to the chart together to prime the student's brain.
2. Positive Reinforcement
Deliver immediate quiet praise when you witness the student using the breathing square or tactile grip.
3. Weekly Review
