Mission Briefing Lesson Plan Mission Briefing
Conflict Resolution Adventure • Teacher Facilitation Guide
Duration
45 MIN
Mission Objective
Students will navigate interpersonal challenges by identifying and applying five core conflict resolution strategies: active listening, empathy, compromise, calm communication, and collaborative problem-solving.
Adventure Logic
This lesson utilizes Experiential and Game-Based Learning . By simulating real-life friction in a low-stakes role-playing environment, students build the muscle memory needed for empathy and communication before conflicts escalate in the real world.
Preparation
Print and cut Conflict Quest Cards (1 per group)
Print Resolution Roadmap for each student
Set up projector for Adventure Briefing Slides
Print Quest Debrief Exit Tickets
Expedition Timeline
5'
Phase 1: The Briefing
Opening Hook: Define conflict as a "natural part of any journey." Ask: "What happens to a team when a conflict isn't solved?"
Visual Aid: Show the video Anger Management Techniques For Kids (on Slide 3) to introduce emotional regulation as the first step to resolution.
Connect: Have students briefly share a time they saw a conflict resolve well versus poorly.
25'
Phase 2: Conflict Quest (Role-Play)
Deployment: Divide students into groups of 3-4. Hand out the Resolution Roadmap and one Conflict Quest Card per group.
The Challenge: Groups have 10 minutes to rehearse a "Bad Ending" (unresolved) and a "Good Ending" (using roadmap strategies) for their scenario.
Showcase: Each group performs their "Good Ending." The audience must identify which specific strategy from the roadmap was used.
10'
Phase 3: The Council Discussion
Facilitate a deep dive into the role-plays:
"Which strategy felt the hardest to use in the moment?"
"What could have happened if we only used compromise without empathy?"
"How does active listening change the 'vibe' of a disagreement?"
5'
Phase 4: Quest Debrief
Distribute the Exit Tickets . Students must reflect on one specific tool they will carry in their "Conflict Toolkit" for future use.
Differentiation & Support
Scaffolded Support
For students who struggle with verbal role-play, provide "Script Starters" for each strategy (e.g., "I feel ___ because ___"). Allow students to draw a comic strip of the resolution instead of performing.
Extension
Have advanced students create a "Conflict Resolution Tree" where they map out different choices and outcomes for a single scenario.

Grade 6 Expedition
"In every conflict, there is a trail leading to a solution. Use these five tools to navigate through the storm and keep your team on track."
1. Active Listening
Give the other person your full attention. Listen to understand, not just to respond.
Pro Tip:
"So what I'm hearing you say is..."
2. Empathy
Put yourself in their shoes. Try to feel what they are feeling. When you understand why they are upset, resolution becomes easier.
Pro Tip:
"I can see why that would make you feel frustrated."
3. Compromise
Meet in the middle. It’s a "win-win" where both people give up a little bit to get something they both want.
Pro Tip:
"How about we do your idea today and mine tomorrow?"
4. Calm Communication
Use "I" statements. Instead of blaming ("You always..."), focus on your feelings ("I feel..."). Keep your voice steady and respectful.
Pro Tip:
"I feel overwhelmed when I'm left with all the work."
5. Problem-Solving
Brainstorm together. View the conflict as a puzzle to be solved rather than a battle to be won. What is a third option neither of you thought of yet?
Pro Tip:
"What's another way we could solve this so everyone is happy?"
