The Brutal Truth
01 / 07
The Freshman Myth
"I'm just naturally disorganized. It's my aesthetic. Some people are neat, and I'm a creative mess. I'll just figure it out later."
— Famous Last Words
The Reality Check
Organization isn't a personality type. It's just a checklist of tiny habits you do before your brain gets lazy.
Small systems beat 'good intentions' every single time.
THE BIG IDEA: Don't get organized. Build a routine that keeps chaos from piling up.
1. Give Every Class a Home
02 / 07
If a paper doesn't have an immediate home, it is already lost.
A
Physical: One specific binder tab or physical folder for EACH class. No loose papers in the middle.
B
Digital: Create matching folders in Google Drive (e.g., "01_English_9", "02_Algebra").
The 0-Second Rule: The moment a paper hits your hands, it goes directly inside its binder home. Never "in between my notebook."
The Twin Rule
Physical Folder
Drive Folder
If it exists physically, it exists digitally. Identical names, identical order.
Warning: High school teachers will not ask "did you file your worksheet?" They will just grade it missing.
2. The Planner Contract
03 / 07
Today's Missions
Math HW pg. 14 (Due Tues)
Bio Lab Report (Done!)
History Exam (Friday!)
Rule: If it's not written, it doesn't exist.
A planner only works if checking it is a daily ritual.
Keeping a planner doesn't mean you have a great memory. It means you don't waste energy trying to remember 6 different classes of work.
8:00 AM Check
Open it at your desk. What is due TODAY? What materials do I need to grab now?
3:00 PM Check
Open it before leaving. What goes home tonight? Pack specific books, not the entire locker.
PRO TIP: Digital planner or physical paper planner? Use the one you will actually look at daily.
3. Defeat the Black Hole
04 / 07
Your backpack is a transport vehicle, not a permanent archives center.
Once or twice a week, schedule a formal 3-minute purge. If you can't physically see an assignment in under five seconds, it effectively does not exist.
The Weekly Purge Protocol
- Empty every single pocket onto a desk
- Throw away trash, wrappers, and unsharpened pencil stubs
- File loose notes directly into their binders
Black Hole Warnings
Typical artifacts recovered from unpurged freshman bags:
A mummified banana from September
Signed permission slip for field trip that happened last week
Homework completed, but crushed into a perfect paper ball
PRO TIP: Establish a static day. "Friday Afternoon Purge" before you start your weekend!
4. Code Your Files
05 / 07
Stop naming documents "English Essay" or "Doc".
When you search your digital drive in three months, "History" will return 400 results. You need a system that makes files instantly findable.
The Code Formula:
Class_AssignmentName_LastName
The Agent of Chaos untitled_doc_final_v2_edit.pdf
The Organized Professional English9_RomeoJulietDraft_Miller.pdf
RULE: Never close your laptop without naming the new document correctly first. No placeholders!
5. The Golden 5-Minute Reset
06 / 07
This single 5-minute routine ties everything together.
Before you wrap up your day or close your eyes, spend exactly 300 seconds answering these five high-stakes survival questions.
Do not go to sleep wondering if you missed something. Go to sleep knowing exactly what tomorrow looks like.
The Nightly Checklist
What do I need to finish tomorrow?
What needs to go in my backpack?
Did I file my papers where they belong?
Did I save digital files in the right folder?
Did I write due dates in my planner?
PRO TIP: Use the pocket tracker handed to you to keep this habit alive for the next 4 weeks!
Immediate Survival Mission
07 / 07
You are not allowed to walk out of this class unorganized.
Start the system right now!
1 Create folders
Open Google Drive. Create 1 folder for each class. Label them clearly (e.g. 01_English_9, 02_Math).
2 Binder Check
Label your physical dividers or folders with matching names. Put loose sheets into their home.
3 First Entry
Open your planner. Write down homework for tomorrow. Even if it's "Read 10 pages"—write it!
Remember: If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. System Initialized
