Grounding Script GuideGrounding Script 5-4-3-2-1 Technique Facilitator Guide Facilitator Instructions Read each prompt slowly and calmly. After each prompt, pause for 15–20 seconds to allow students to notice and process. Invite sharing, but remind students they can also keep their observations private. Introduction "Okay, friends, we’re going to try a grounding exercise called the 5-4-3-2-1 method. This is a quick way to help our minds and bodies calm down by using our senses. You can share your answers out loud or just think them quietly—either way works! Ready? Let’s begin." 5 "First, 5 things you can see. Look around the room and notice five things—big or small. I’ll pause while you look and think." Pause 15-20 seconds... "Who would like to share one thing they saw?" 4 "Next, 4 things you can touch. Notice how they feel—soft, hard, smooth, or rough. Take a moment to touch and think." Pause 15-20 seconds... "Who can share one thing they touched?" 3 "Now, 3 things you can hear. Listen closely—maybe it’s the clock ticking, birds outside, or your own breathing. Pause and listen." Pause 15-20 seconds... "Would anyone like to share a sound they heard?" 2 "Then, 2 things you can smell. Maybe it’s your snack, the air freshener, or something outside. Take a moment to sniff." Pause 15-20 seconds... "Who can share one scent they noticed?" 1 "Finally, 1 thing you can taste. It could be your water, gum, or just the air in your mouth. Notice the taste." Pause 15-20 seconds... "Who would like to share what they tasted?" Closing "Fantastic job, everyone. Notice how your body feels now—more grounded or calm? Remember, you can use this 5-4-3-2-1 method anytime you feel overwhelmed or need a quick reset. Great work!"
Breathing Buddy ActivityBreathing Buddy Exercise Visual Mindful Breathing Technique Purpose To teach students deep, mindful breathing using a small object to visually guide inhale and exhale cycles. This helps slow the heart rate and anchor attention to the body. Materials Small, lightweight objects (stuffed animal, plush toy, or stress ball) Timer or chime (optional) 1 Introduction "Today we’ll practice calm breathing by watching our Breathing Buddy rise and fall. This helps us slow down and notice how breathing affects our bodies." 2 Positioning Have students lie on their backs or sit straight. Place the buddy on their belly, just below the ribs. Ensure they can see it move. 3 Guided Breathing Rounds Round 1: Belly Breaths Inhale: 4 seconds through the nose. Watch the buddy lift up. Exhale: 6 seconds through the mouth. Watch the buddy lower down. Repeat 3–4 times. Pause to notice physical sensations. Round 2: Counting Breaths Sequence: Inhale for 3, hold for 2, exhale for 5. Repeat 3–4 times. Focus on the buddy's steady rhythm. 4 Reflection Students close eyes with buddies still on bellies. Ask: "How did the buddy help you slow down? What did you notice in your body?" Invite volunteers to share. 5 Transition Remind students they can do this anytime without a buddy by placing a hand on their belly. Thank them and gently set buddies aside. Teacher Tips Model It Practice alongside students so they can see timing and posture. Use Sound Use a soft chime or gentle clap to signal the start and end of rounds. Adaptation If lying down is uncomfortable, students can sit upright with the buddy on their lap.
