Lesson Timeline
5 MIN
1. Introduction
Discuss the definition of stress and its universal presence. Facilitate a brief brainstorm of common high school stressors (grades, social life, time management).
15 MIN
2. Role-Playing Activity
Divide students into small groups. Distribute scenario cards. Groups must act out the scenario twice: once showing an unhealthy response, and once showing a resilient, healthy response.
10 MIN
3. Group Debrief
Reconvene the class. Use the provided Discussion Questions to synthesize the role-play experiences and identify common "green flag" coping strategies.
5 MIN
4. Reflection & Wrap-up
Individual completion of the Emotional Awareness worksheet. Collect these as an exit ticket or check for understanding.
Facilitation Details
1
The Hook (5 min)
Discussion Starters:
"If stress was a weather pattern, what would it look like for you today?"
"Why do some people seem to 'bounce back' while others get stuck?"
2
Role-Play Dynamics (15 min)
Divide the class into 5 groups. Give each group one Scenario Card .
Pro-Tip
Encourage students to lean into the "Unhealthy Response" first—it usually gets the laughs out of the way and makes the "Healthy Response" feel more practical.
Focus for groups: What is the character feeling? (Physical signs) + What is the character doing? (Coping strategy)
3
Coping Brainstorm (10 min)
Identify Emotions
Fear, Inadequacy, Frustration, Loneliness, Overwhelm, Anxiety.
Healthy Strategies
Deep breathing, prioritization, honest communication, boundary setting, positive self-talk.
4
Closure (5 min)
Remind students that resilience isn't about *never* feeling stressed—it's about having a toolkit to navigate it. Distribute the Emotional Awareness Worksheet for individual reflection.
Resilience Scenario Cards Activity Resilience Scenario Cards
Cut along the dashed lines. Each group takes one card to role-play.
The Final Countdown
You have a high-stakes final exam tomorrow morning. You realize you haven't reviewed two major units and you feel completely unprepared.
Academic Stress
The Silent Treatment
Your best friend is clearly upset with you. They are avoiding eye contact and ignoring your texts, but you aren't exactly sure what you did wrong.
Social Stress
The Overload
Between your part-time job, varsity sports, and three hours of homework tonight, you feel like you are drowning. You have zero free time to rest.
Time Management
Center Stage
You have to give a 10-minute presentation in front of the entire class. Public speaking is your biggest fear, and your turn is next.
Performance Anxiety
On the Outside
You see your core group of friends posting photos together at a movie you weren't invited to. You feel left out and excluded.
Belonging Stress
The Challenge
Act out your scenario twice.
ROUND 1: Reactive
ROUND 2: Resilient
Resilience Discussion Guide The Debrief
