A comprehensive social-emotional learning lesson guiding students to distinguish between intention and impact during peer conflicts, de-escalate defensive reactions, and use a four-step restorative framework to repair relationships.
Practice speaking your script out loud with your partner. Partner evaluates using these criteria:
Zero "BUTs" in the apology
Named specific emotional impact
Offered realistic future change
Self-Reflection: A strong apology restores trust; an excuse only protects pride. Bridge the Gap
Restorative Practice Tip: Praise students who publicly revise defensive language in class. Page 1 of 2

Live Demonstration Script (Teacher + Student Volunteer) 5-Minute Fishbowl
Take 1: The Defensive Failure
Student: "You completely cut me off while I was answering Mr. Davis, and then everyone looked at you instead."
Teacher (Model): "I only jumped in because you paused! I was trying to save you from being embarrassed, but if you're going to get mad over nothing, forget it."
Ask class: "How does the student feel now? Was the connection repaired or damaged further?"
Take 2: The Restorative Bridge
Student: "You completely cut me off while I was answering Mr. Davis, and then everyone looked at you instead."
Teacher (Model): "I'm sorry. I interrupted you and took away your turn to shine. I was just excited about the answer, AND it was still rude of me to talk over you. Next time, I'll wait until you're completely done."
Ask class: "What changed? Where did intent go? Notice how 'AND' replaced 'BUT'."
Worksheet Diagnostic Exemplar Key
Scenario A (Tyler & Sam • Harsh Slide Critique):
• Tyler's Intent: Wanted the project to get an 'A'; feeling stressed about the grading rubric.
• Sam's Impact: Deep public humiliation, felt dismissed as incompetent before peers.
• Exemplar 4-Step Script: "Sam, I realize calling out your slides in front of everyone embarrassed you. That wasn't fair. I was panicked about our grade, and I had no right to insult your hard work. How can we combine our slide designs together privately?"
Scenario B (Avery & Devon • Social Media Video):
• Avery's Intent: Thought the moment was funny/endearing, looking for social likes/engagement.
• Devon's Impact: Felt betrayed, mocked in hallways, lost sense of psychological safety around phones.
• Exemplar 4-Step Script: "Devon, I see people making fun of you and I know that came directly from my story. I thought it was playful, but it made you a target. I deleted the post immediately and I won't post you without asking first."
Follow-Up Restorative Circle Prompts
"Think of a time someone hurt your feelings and gave you a defensive 'I didn't mean to!' What did that do to your trust in them?"
"What is one physical signal (racing heart, clutched jaw) that warns you that you are about to raise your 'intent shield'?"
"How can our classroom culture make it safe for people to admit mistakes without being canceled or bullied?"
