Breathing Calm Lesson Script Teacher Resource
Lesson Script: 4-7-8 Breathing Calm
Part 1: Reflecting on Emotions
5 Minutes
Say: "Good morning, class! Let's take a moment to check in with ourselves. How are you feeling right now? You can give a thumbs up, sideways, or down, or just take a moment to identify how you're feeling inside. It's perfectly normal to experience a range of emotions throughout the day."
Say: "Sometimes, we encounter what we might call 'strong emotions' or 'intense feelings.' These could be anything from feeling really stressed about an upcoming test, frustrated with a challenging problem, or even super excited about something happening later. When these feelings come up, our bodies often react – maybe your stomach feels a bit fluttery, or your shoulders get tight. Has anyone noticed how their body responds to different emotions?"
Part 2: Introducing the Technique
10 Minutes
Say: "Today, we're going to learn about a powerful self-regulation strategy that can help us navigate these strong emotions. We call these 'coping skills.' Coping skills are like tools in a mental toolbox that help us respond thoughtfully to situations, rather than just reacting impulsively. Everyone can develop and use these skills!"
Say: "Our specific coping skill for today is a simple, yet highly effective breathing technique called 4-7-8 Breathing. The numbers represent the duration for each part of the breath cycle. This technique works by activating your parasympathetic nervous system – your body's natural 'rest and digest' system."
Display the 4-7-8 Breathing Visual Aid and point to the Inhale section.
Say: "First, you'll close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose for 4 counts. Focus on breathing deeply into your belly. Let's try it together. Place your finger on the first box. Ready? Inhale... 1, 2, 3, 4."
Part 3: Guided Practice
10 Minutes
Say: "Next, we hold our breath for 7 counts. This pause allows your body to absorb more oxygen and further engage that calming response. It might feel a bit unusual at first, but just do your best. Let's move our finger to the 'Hold Your Breath' boxes. Ready? Hold... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7."
Say: "And finally, we exhale completely through our mouth, making a gentle 'whoosh' sound, for 8 counts. This long exhale is crucial for releasing tension. Ready? Exhale... whoosh... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8."
Lead 3 more rounds. Provide gentle verbal cues. Encourage students to close their eyes if comfortable.
Say: "How do you feel after several rounds? Do you notice a greater sense of calm or focus? It's incredible how much control we have over our internal state just by consciously regulating our breath!"
