Brain Remote Teacher Guide CBT Facilitation Guide
Brain Remote Academy
Teaching Self-Regulation & Compliance through Stop-Think-Act
Target Audience
Age 8 (3rd Grade)
Core Goal
Improve response latency to adult instructions and build task-initiation habits.
CBT Concept
Cognitive restructuring of demands from "threats" to manageable "levels" or instructions.
Duration
30 - 45 Minutes (ideal for individual counseling or 1-on-1 coaching).
The "Brain Remote" Metaphor
Stop-Think-Act Cycle
1. PAUSE (Stop)
The Physical Break
Freeze body immediately. Take one deep "cooling breath" to turn off automatic emotional reactions.
2. THINK (Rewind/Preview)
The Screen Mind
Rewind instruction ("What did they say?"). Preview consequence ("What happens if I delay?").
3. PLAY (Act)
The Smart Move
Commence the task within 5 seconds with a calm face, even if feeling minor frustration.
1 Step 1: Introducing the Brain Remote (10 mins)
Elicit interest by discussing how remote controls work. Show that just like an Xbox, iPad, or TV, our brain has standard buttons we can press to control our body.
Suggested Educator Script
"Have you ever played a game where you got stuck on a tough level and wanted to smash the buttons? Your brain can act like that sometimes when a teacher or parent asks you to do something you don't want to do, like stop gaming or start math. When we get mad, it's like a jammed controller! Today, we are going to activate a hidden program inside you: your Brain Remote Control . It puts you in charge of your body so you don't crash."
2 Step 2: Coaching the Buttons (15 mins)
Walk through the three vital commands with physical and verbal prompting. Work together to fill out the Student Mission Worksheet .
Practice PAUSE: Give a random prompt (e.g., "Do jumping jacks!"). Shout "PAUSE!" The student must immediately freeze like a statue and take a huge breath.
Practice REWIND / PREVIEW: Ask, "What was my command?" (Rewind). Then ask: "If you keep jumping, what happens? If you pause, what happens?" (Preview).
Practice PLAY: Press the imaginary play button on their palm to execute the instruction with a focused mind.

Testing Lab & Active Scenarios
Hands-on role-play challenges and clinical de-escalation tips
Brain Remote Laboratory (Role-Play Challenges)
Use these scenarios to practice the Stop-Think-Act rhythm. The goal is for the student to hear the "trigger instruction" and verbally call out their button stages.
The Trigger Instruction Target "Think" Reframe Target "Play" Action "Shut down the tablet, it's time for bed." "If I scream, my tablet gets locked tomorrow. If I shut it now, I get credit." Hand over tablet, walk straight to wash hands. "Please stop talking and open your math book." "I want to keep talking, but my math grade goes down if I don't start." Open book, pick up pencil, face forward. "Put your coat on, we are leaving right now." "My friends are waiting at the park. If I stall, we stay here longer." Grab coat immediately, zip it, wait at door.
Cognitive Restructuring Strategy (Solving "Button Jams")
8-year-old boys often struggle with instructions because they experience them as abrupt autonomy threats ("They are trying to control me!"). Use the following scripts to restructure their perspective:
Automatic Negative Thought
"This isn't fair! I want to finish my game. Why do they get to boss me around?"
Reframed Cool Thought
"Instructions are like in-game missions. If I clear this mission fast, I get more free time."
Troubleshooting & Coaching Tips
How to handle a stubborn "No": If the student outright refuses, do not engage in a power struggle. Calmly state: "Your remote is stuck on pause. Let's hit the Rewind and think about your options." Give 10 seconds of space to allow processing.
Fostering Token Integration: Tie the Brain Remote to the Token Board & Desk Visuals . Award a button point or token as soon as they complete the "Play" phase of an instruction. Immediate reinforcement is vital.
Parent-School Hand-off
Provide the parents with the Home Practice Contract to bridge school training with daily home routines.

Weekly Target
10 Buttons Logged
Dear Families,
This week, our cadet learned to use their "Brain Remote Control" to manage their emotional and physical reactions to adult directions and instructions. This CBT strategy teaches impulse control using a fun, relatable 3-step cycle:
• PAUSE (Stop) Freeze your body, take one slow, cooling breath, and do not argue.
• THINK (Evaluate) Think: "What's the rule? What happens if I wait vs if I start now?"
• PLAY (Action) Start the task right away with a calm face. Clear the mission!
Tip: If your child begins to resist a home command, ask: "Can you hit PAUSE on your remote control and REWIND the direction?"
The Weekly Remote Tracker
Use this grid to log directions at home (e.g., "Brush teeth," "Get dressed," "Dinner time"). Color in the button symbols when your child initiates the task within 5 seconds without arguing!
