Instructional Flow
10 min
Introduction to Resilience
Display slides 1–5 of the slide deck. Define resilience and discuss why bouncing back matters. Prompt students to share a time they faced a challenge and how they responded.
"Think of resilience like a rubber band—it can stretch and bend when pulled, but it returns to its shape instead of snapping."
10 min
Personal Reflection
Distribute the Setback Reflection Worksheet . Students individually list a recent setback and note their feelings, reactions, and lessons learned. Focus on the opportunity for growth rather than the failure.
15 min
Strategy Brainstorm
Introduce the Growth Mindset Strategy Cards . In groups of 3–4, students draw two cards each and discuss how to apply those specific strategies to their own setback scenarios.
Groups should list concrete, practical steps on paper for each strategy discussed.
15 min
Group Sharing
Reconvene the class. Invite each group to share one scenario and their chosen strategies. Use slides 6–8 to highlight effective approaches and facilitate peer feedback.
10 min
Wrap-Up & Assessment
Use slides 9–10 to recap. Ask each student to write down one new strategy they will apply in the coming week. Collect these "Action Plans" as an exit ticket to assess understanding.
Resilience Slide Deck Bouncing Back
Stronger
An interactive workshop on building resilience and turning challenges into opportunities.
Teacher Notes Introduce yourself and explain that today’s session will help them learn how to bounce back from challenges stronger than before.
What Is Resilience?
Resilience is the ability to recover from difficulties and keep moving forward.
It’s not about never failing
It’s about learning and growing from setbacks
🌱
Grow through it
Teacher Notes Define resilience in simple terms. Emphasize that everyone faces setbacks and that resilience is a skill we can build.
Why Bouncing Back Matters
Handles stress and pressure
Builds confidence & esteem
Improves problem-solving
Supports long-term success
Teacher Notes Explain why resilience matters both in school and in life. Invite a couple of students to share quick examples.
Case Study
Real-Life Resilience
“After failing to make the school basketball team, Alex practiced daily, sought feedback, and eventually became team captain.”
🏀 ➡️ 🏆
Discussion
Teacher Notes Tell a brief story (Alex's example). Highlight the turning point where they chose to persevere.
Your Turn: Reflect
Think quietly or jot down answers:
1
What setback did you experience recently?
2
How did it make you feel?
3
What did you do in response?
Teacher Notes Guide students through a quick think-pair-share. They’ll later write about this on their worksheets.
Resilience Toolkit
01
Embrace a Growth Mindset
02
Set SMART Goals
03
Seek Support from Others
04
Practice Self-Care
Teacher Notes Introduce the four strategies. Explain that we'll dive deeper into two of them now.
Strategy 1
Embrace a
Growth Mindset
View challenges as learning opportunities
Use “yet” when something feels too hard
Celebrate effort, not just outcomes
“I can't do this... YET!”
Teacher Notes Contrast fixed vs. growth mindsets. Ask students for examples of “I can’t” vs. “I can learn.”
Strategy 2
Set SMART Goals
S
Specific
M
Measurable
A
Achievable
R
Relevant
T
Time-bound
Example:
“I will review my vocabulary flashcards for 10 minutes each evening this week.”
Teacher Notes Describe each letter of SMART. Invite students to suggest their own SMART goal for a school challenge.
Your Resilience Toolkit
Which one will you use first?
Growth Mindset
SMART Goals
Seek Support
Self-Care
Teacher Notes Quickly recap all four strategies. Encourage students to think about which they find most helpful.
Your Action Plan
Write down ONE strategy you will practice over the next week:
• Which strategy?
• When and how?
Teacher Notes Explain that students will choose one strategy to apply this week. Collect responses as exit tickets.

Describe a Recent Setback
Think of a time recently when things didn't go as planned (e.g., a grade you weren't happy with, not making a team, a disagreement with a friend).
2
How did you feel?
3
What was your reaction?
4
Growth Opportunities
Looking back now, what did you learn from this experience? How can you use this setback to grow or do something differently next time?

Growth Mindset
The Concept
Believe that your abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. Use the word "yet."
How to apply:
"I don't understand this... yet. What is one small step I can take to learn more?"
SMART Goals
The Concept
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Break big challenges into tiny steps.
How to apply:
"Instead of 'I'll do better in math,' try 'I'll practice 5 problems for 20 mins every Tuesday.'"
Seek Support
The Concept
Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Identify teachers, family, or friends who can assist.
How to apply:
"Who is one person I trust? How can I clearly explain what I need help with?"
Self-Care
The Concept
Manage stress by taking care of your physical and mental health. Sleep, exercise, and hobbies matter.
How to apply:
"When I'm stressed, I will take 5 deep breaths or go for a 10-minute walk to reset my brain."
Growth Mindset
The Concept
Challenges aren't roadblocks; they're puzzles waiting to be solved. Change 'I can't' to 'How can I?'
How to apply:
"What is one thing I learned from failing at this? How can I use that lesson next time?"
SMART Goals
The Concept
Focus on progress, not perfection. Set goals that you can actually track and complete in a week.
How to apply:
"Pick one specific time and place to work on your goal this week. Write it down."
Seek Support
The Concept
You don't have to carry the weight alone. Collaborative problem-solving often leads to better solutions.
How to apply:
"Practice asking for help: 'I'm struggling with X, do you have a few minutes to talk?'"
Self-Care
The Concept
Your brain needs a break to bounce back. Schedule downtime and prioritize your physical well-being.
How to apply:
"What is one activity that always makes you feel calm? Make time for it today."
