Mission Log: The Fog of Writing
Pilot Pax is the captain of the Silver Streak. Usually, Pax loves flying. But lately, his engine has been acting strange.
"Engine Check," Pax sighed, leaning back in his cockpit. "Status: Low Power."
Some days, the Streak feels heavy. It doesn't want to take off. Moving his arms to reach the controls feels like lifting heavy weights. The teachers say, "Full throttle, Pax!" but his fuel tank feels empty.
One day, the Master Mechanic visited Pax. "I can't get the plane to move," Pax told her. "The pilot wants to fly, but the plane won't listen!"
The Mechanic smiled. "Pax, you and the Streak aren't two different things. You are synced up. When the plane's wings feel heavy, your shoulders feel heavy. When the engine is cold, your heart feels slow. You are the plane."
Whenever Pax has to log his flight coordinates—using the heavy titanium pen—his hands feel stiff. The clouds get thick and grey. He looks at the logbook and his brain feels like it's stuck in "Buffer Mode."
"When the Pencil Clouds come," the Mechanic explained, "your plane tries to save energy by shutting down. It’s not being lazy. It’s just trying to protect the engine."
Pax looked at his hands and then at the wings of his plane. They felt exactly the same. "So if I want to fly again," Pax asked, "I have to listen to what the plane is telling me?"
"Exactly," she whispered. "Listen to your sensors, Pilot."

Mindset Mechanic: Pilot Energy Session
Session Overview
This session helps students (ages 8-11) who exhibit low motivation or lethargy by using a Flight Metaphor to externalize the struggle. It focuses heavily on interoception —the ability to notice and interpret internal bodily signals.
Key Objectives
Build the "Body-as-Plane" connection (Interoception).
Identify "Low Battery" signs (lethargy/avoidance).
Normalize frustration with writing ("Pencil Clouds").
Select and test 2 coping strategies.
Materials Needed

The "I am the Plane" Bridge
If a student struggles to see themselves as the plane, use these Interoceptive Anchors . Avoid abstract talk; focus on physical sensations that happen *right now*.
Concept: The Dashboard Connection
"Just like a plane has a dashboard with lights, your body has signals. If your heart is thumping, that's your 'Engine Temp' light blinking. Can you find a light on your dashboard right now?"
Concept: Physical Mapping
"Touch your shoulders. These are your wings. If they feel heavy and sinking, your wings are 'frozen.' What happens to a plane when the wings are frozen? They need a de-icer (like a stretch)!"
Instructional Sequence

The Story (10 min)
Read Pilot Pax Story . Pause when Pax's ship feels "heavy." Ask: "Where in your body do you feel heavy when it's time to write? In your hands? Your head? Your tummy?"

The Sensor Lab (15 min)
Use the Engine Sensor Lab . This is the core interoception work. If they can't feel their heart, have them jump in place for 10 seconds to "rev the engine" so the signal gets louder.

Tactical Planning (10 min)
Choose 2 Flight Control Cards based on the "Sensor Lab" results. If wings are frozen, use "Engine Jumpstart." If fuel is low, use "Coolant Refill."

Mission Log (5 min)
Fill out the Mission Flight Plan . Practice saying: "I am checking my sensors. My fuel is low. I am choosing a tool."
