Desk Audit Teacher Guide THE GREAT DESK AUDIT
Lesson 1: Workspace Evaluation
TEACHER GUIDE
Master Organizer Series
Lesson Objective
Students will identify "clutter" in their personal workspace and categorize items into three action-based groups (Essential, Trash, Take Home) to understand how organization affects focus.
Timing
Hook Activity: 10 min
Audit/Sorting: 20 min
Reflection: 10 min
Hook: The "Missing Pencil" Challenge
Setup
Select two desks (or use your own). Desk A should be "The Chaos Zone" (papers everywhere, loose pencils, trash). Desk B should be "The Pro Station" (organized bins, clear surface).
Action
Ask for two volunteers. Challenge them to find a specific item (e.g., a green highlighter or a ruler) as fast as possible. Use a stopwatch.
Key Discussion Questions:
How did the timer make you feel when you couldn't find the item?
What was the biggest obstacle in Desk A?
How does searching for things affect your school day?
The 3-Pile Sort
Explain the Keep, Toss, Move categories before students touch their desks.
ESSENTIALS
Needed daily
Pencils, current workbook, journal, headphones.
TRASH
Garbage & Scraps
Broken pencils, old snack wrappers, scraps of paper.
TAKE HOME
Finished or extra
Old tests, artwork, non-school toys, extra layers of clothes.
Supporting All Learners
Visual Supports: Provide physical bins labeled with icons (Trash, Home, Keep) for students to physically drop items into.
Physical Support: For students with fine motor challenges, assist in sorting items, but allow them to make the choice of which pile it belongs to.
Decision Fatigue: If a student is overwhelmed, have them sort 5 items at a time, then take a "clearing breath" break.
Executive Function: Use a timer for the sorting phase to prevent "perfectionism stalling."

Sensory Tool Slides FOCUS FIRST
SENSORY MANAGEMENT
Tools for the Brain, Not for the Hands
Is it a Tool or a Toy?
It's a TOOL
• It helps you focus on the teacher.
• It is used quietly.
• It stays in your hand or on your lap.
It's a TOY
• It distracts you from the lesson.
• It makes noise or clicks.
• It is being thrown or shared.
The Ninja Retrieval Rules
No Looking
Reach into your sensory zone without taking your eyes off the teacher.
Zero Sound
No banging the desk lid or clicking the tool. Silent as a ninja.
Park it Early
As soon as the transition starts, the tool goes back to its parking spot.
Mission: Silent Access
I am going to start teaching. When I give the signal, see if you can grab your focus tool without me hearing or seeing you do it .

IT'S A TOOL IF...
It keeps my hands busy so my brain can listen.
It is silent and doesn't distract others.
I only use it when I really need to focus.

I am looking at it instead of the teacher.
I am clicking, spinning, or making noise.
I am showing it to my friends during work.

The Loud Hallway
A noisy class just walked by in the hallway. It's making it hard to focus on your math work.
Ninja Mission:
Retrieve your headphones from the Sensory Zone without looking down or making a sound.
The Squirmy Lesson
You've been sitting on the carpet for 15 minutes. Your hands really want to move, but you need to listen to the story.
Ninja Mission:
Use a small fidget tool in your lap. Keep it completely hidden from your neighbors.
The Transition Bell
The teacher just said, "Clear your desks for lunch!" Everyone is moving fast.
Ninja Mission:
Before you touch any books, put your sensory tool back in its exact parking spot.
The Shiny Distraction
Your fidget tool is very colorful. You find yourself looking at it more than the whiteboard.
Ninja Mission:
Realize it has become a "Toy." Put it away quietly and try to focus without it for 5 minutes.
Teacher's Note
Cut these cards out. Hand them to small groups to practice the scenarios. Have other students "judge" if the ninja was silent and focused.
