Pivot Patrol Master Guide PIVOT PATROL
Grades K-2 Emotional Regulation Curriculum
COACH MASTER MANUAL
Master Facilitation & Curriculum Guide
Welcome to the **Pivot Patrol** curriculum! This intensive 8-session cognitive-behavioral intervention is specifically designed for primary students (Grades K-2) struggling with rigid perfectionism and an obsession with winning. Through playful, concrete metaphors and explicit positive self-talk, students learn to "pivot" away from stuck feelings and stay in the game.
THE K-2 RIGIDITY CHALLENGE
For young children, losing a game or making a mistake on a drawing can feel like the end of the world. Perfectionism and high competitiveness lead to **"Stuck Mode"**—manifested as crying, tearing up paper, refusing to play, or knocking over game pieces. This curriculum replaces "Stuck Mode" with **"Pivot Mode"**—a flexible way of thinking that keeps them playing and learning.
THE CELEBRATE-THE-PIVOT CYCLE
🛑 1. STUCK FEELING
A mistake happens or they lose a game.
🌱 2. SAY THE SCRIPT
Say the growing brain or game script aloud.
🪙 3. EARN & PLAY
Get a Pivot Token and keep going!

SCRIPTS & TOKENS
SECTION 1: SYSTEM CONTROLS
The K-2 Positive Self-Talk Scripts
Explicit scripts used to pivot and earn reinforcement tokens.
🌱 Perfectionism Script
For Mistakes & Errors
Use this script when a child makes a writing mistake, rips paper, or feels their creation isn't perfect.
"Mistakes help my brain grow!"
🤝 Losing Script
For Losing & Games
Use this script when a child loses a board game, misses their turn, or if someone else is chosen first.
"Maybe next time, good game!"
THE PIVOT TOKEN ECONOMY
The heart of this curriculum is rewarding the **Pivot** rather than the performance. Students earn a physical **Pivot Token** (e.g., a green wooden token or coin) specifically for demonstrating flexibility when a snag occurs.
1. THE SNAG
An error occurs or they lose a round.
2. THE SCRIPT
Child says their positive phrase.
3. CONTINUE
Child keeps playing with a calm body.
⚡ Note: Never reward a token for winning. ONLY reward tokens for a clean verbal pivot and continuing!

SECTION 2: MODEL-LEAD-TEST
How to Deliver the Pivot Training
Use this systematic Model-Lead-Test framework to introduce scripts and tokens.
Step 1: Model (I Do) Show them what it looks like
Intentionally make a big mistake while coloring or building a toy blocks tower. Act frozen like a statue ("Stuck Mode"), then show how to "pivot."
Coach Script: "Oh no! I was drawing a sunshine, but my marker slipped and made a giant scribble across my page. My face feels hot and my arms want to fold up into Stuck Mode. But wait... can I pivot? Let me take a deep, slow tummy breath... [*Inhale and exhale*]. I can say my power script: 'Mistakes help my brain grow!' Look, I didn't rip the page, and I didn't stop playing. I earned my first green Pivot Token! Let's turn this scribble into a funny cloud. See? I kept going!"
Step 2: Lead (We Do) Do it together
Play a simple game of Tic-Tac-Toe. Intentionally win the game, then guide the student to say the game script alongside you.
Coach Script: "Alright, look at that—three circles in a row! I won this round. I see your eyes look a bit sad and you're starting to push the board away. That's a tiny stuck feeling creeping in! Let's freeze it. Take a deep breath with me. Let's say our game script together in our best champion voices: 'Maybe next time, good game!' Awesome high-five! You didn't quit. Here is your shiny Pivot Token!"
Step 3: Test (You Do) Check for independence
Set up a small competitive task. If they make a mistake or lose, pause and wait. Observe if they use the script and continue on their own.
Coach Script: "Now let's do a standalone champion challenge! We are going to build towers out of blocks. Oops, your tower fell over! Let's see what the Pivot Patrol does when a tower falls down. I am watching for your deep breath and your power script..."

Meet the Pivot
Target: Grades K-2 (Emotional Flexibility & Self-Talk)
PACING: 40 MIN FORMAT: 1-ON-1 / SMALL GROUP
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Identify the physical and emotional cues of **"Stuck Mode"** vs. **"Pivot Mode."**
Define the concept of **"Pivoting"** (turning around a mistake or a loss flexibly).
Understand the connection between saying the positive script and earning **Pivot Tokens**.

LESSON PACING & PROCEDURE
1
The "Oops!" Hook (5 Mins)
Coach draws a cheerful picture of a puppy or kitten. Intentionally make a large scribble on top of the drawing. Freeze your body completely like an ice statue. Ask the student: "Look at me! I am completely frozen and mad because of my mistake. My body is in **Stuck Mode**. Should I rip this paper, or can I find a way to **Pivot**?"
2
Direct Instruction: Stuck vs. Pivot (10 Mins)
Introduce the characters of "Stuck Mode" (rigid like a statue, mad face, wanting to quit) and "Pivot Mode" (spinning like a wheel, calm deep breath, finding a flexible path). Explain: "When mistakes happen or when we lose a game, our bodies might want to go into Stuck Mode. But Pivot Patrol officers learn to **Pivot** so they can keep playing and having fun!"
3
Guided Practice: Body Clues (10 Mins)
Act out various emotional states. "Show me your frozen Stuck face!" (Child models crossed arms, tight jaw). "Show me your flexible Pivot body!" (Child models loose shoulders, deep belly breath, a bright smile). Practice turning a "Stuck body" into a "Pivot body" at the sound of a chime or whistle.
4
Introduce Token Economy (10 Mins)
Hold up a green physical **Pivot Token**. Explain: "In the Pivot Patrol, we do not earn tokens for being the absolute best or always winning. We earn tokens for doing a **Pivot**! When you make a mistake or lose a game, if you choose to take a breath, say your magic pivot script, and keep playing, you instantly earn a token!"
5
Closing & Token Check-in (5 Mins)
Celebrate the child's flexible modeling today. Award them their first Pivot Patrol token board and their first token for great modeling. Emphasize: next time, we will learn our two magic verbal phrases to pivot!

Stuck and Pivot
Target: Grades K-2 (Self-Regulation & Somatic Clues)
PACING: 40 MIN FORMAT: 1-ON-1 / SMALL GROUP
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Recognize the **physical signals** of "Stuck Mode" in own body (e.g., tight fists, fast heart).
Match real school setbacks (errors, losing games) to either Stuck Mode or Pivot Mode.
Demonstrate the somatic transition from a tense "Stuck" state to a relaxed "Pivot" state.
MATERIALS LIST
Stuck or Pivot Map Handout (Session 2)
Green physical **Pivot Tokens**
Large red "Stuck" stop sign card & green "Pivot" arrow card
Somatic tracking sheet (Session 2)
LESSON PACING & PROCEDURE
1
The "Frozen Statue" Warm-up (5 Mins)
Introduce the "Frozen Statue" game. When you yell "STUCK!", the child must freeze their body as hard and tense as ice. When you yell "PIVOT!", they must melt their muscles, take a deep tummy breath, and wave their hands loosely. Practice this 3 times to build body awareness of tension vs. relaxation.
2
Direct Instruction: Physical Clues (10 Mins)
Teach body clues. Explain: "When a game doesn't go our way or we make a mistake, our bodies give us warnings. In Stuck Mode: our fists squeeze tight, our breath gets short, and our tummy feels heavy like a rock. In Pivot Mode: we release the squeeze, take a slow breath, say our magic self-talk script, and keep our body moving. It keeps us in control!"
3
Guided Practice: Sorting Map Handout (10 Mins)
Complete the **Stuck or Pivot Map Handout** together. For each matched item, have the child model the physical state. "If our block tower falls down and we kick it, show me your Stuck body!" "If we color outside the lines but use our self-talk script, show me your Pivot body!" Guide them to use calm, relaxed postures.
4
Independent Test: Melt the Ice Challenge (10 Mins)
Toss a paper ball and purposely miss a target bucket. Instantly act out "Stuck Mode" (angry growl, crossed arms). Hold up the green Pivot card. The student must act as the Pivot Officer and guide you out of the stuck feeling: "Melt the ice, coach! Take a breath and pivot!" Award a Pivot Token to them for excellent coaching.
5
Closing & Token Check-in (5 Mins)
Review: "If our body gets tight, we choose to Pivot!" Put a star sticker on Session 2 of their tracking log. Remind them that next session, we learn the exact magic words to say!

2
Model: The Perfectionism & Losing Phrases (10 Mins)
Show Slides 3 & 4. Model making an error (draw a wavy line instead of straight). Take a big tummy breath, trace the **growing seedling** icon, and say: "Mistakes help my brain grow!" Then model losing a fast turn-taking game, shake hands with the child, and say: "Maybe next time, good game!"
3
Lead: The Magic Practice Game (10 Mins)
Play "Scribble and Shake". Give the child a crayon. Ask them to scribble on purpose, then guide them to say: "Mistakes help my brain grow!" Hand them a Pivot Token. 4
Test: The Independent Drawing Snag (10 Mins)
Ask the child to draw their favorite food. While they color, gently nudge their arm on purpose so they make an error. Pause and wait. Observe: Do they take a breath, say the correct perfectionism phrase, and keep drawing? Repeat with a quick game where they lose. Earning a token requires saying the phrase and continuing!
5
