Echo Slides Module 01
Echo Slides
Understanding the internal vibrations of our emotions.
INNER COMPASS PROJECT
The Physical Echo
Before we "feel" an emotion in our heads, our body often sends a signal first. We call this the Echo.
Body Clues:
Tight chest or throat
Clenched fists or jaw
Butterflies in stomach
Heat in the face
What is a Trigger?
A Trigger is an event, word, or situation that causes an immediate emotional response.
PEOPLE
A specific teacher's tone or a peer's comment.
PLACES
The crowded hallway or a quiet testing room.
THINGS
Technology glitches or difficult assignments.
Pause & Reflect
Think of the last time you felt frustrated at school.
"Where did you feel it in your body first? What was the exact moment it started?"

MODULE 01: EMOTIONAL ECHOES
NAME:
DATE:
1. The Body Scan
Think of a time you felt angry, frustrated, or anxious at school. Where did you feel it? Draw symbols on the map below.
KEY SYMBOLS:
🔥 Heat/Burning
⛓️ Tension/Tightness
🦋 Fluttery/Weak
⚡ Sharp Pain/Jolts
2. The Spark
What words or actions from others usually start that physical "echo" for you?
3. The Location
Where in the school building do these feelings happen most often?
Pattern Analysis
Connecting the dots between your body and your environment.
A typical cycle for me looks like...
TRIGGER
BODY SIGNAL
ACTION
Describe a recent example of this cycle:
What am I needing in those moments?
Check all that apply when you are triggered:
To be left alone for a bit
To feel heard or understood
To have help with a task
To move my body/burn energy
To have a "re-do" on a mistake

COUNSELOR RESOURCE • MODULE 01
45 MIN SESSION
Primary Goal
Connect physical sensations to emotional states.
Key Vocabulary
Trigger, Echo, Body Signal, Dysregulation.
Student Outcome
Identify 3 personal school-based triggers.
Session Flow
1
The "Echo" Intro (10 mins)
Use the Echo Slides to introduce the idea that emotions are physical events first. Use the blueprint metaphor: our body has a wiring system that alerts us to stress.
"Think of a smoke detector. It doesn't start the fire; it just tells you there's smoke. Your body signals are like that alarm."
2
Body Mapping (15 mins)
Hand out the Trigger Map Worksheet. Guide the student through the "Body Scan." If they struggle to identify feelings, provide examples like "fidgety legs" or "heavy eyes."
Validate all sensations; there are no "wrong" echoes.
Encourage them to use different colors for different intensities.
3
Identifying the Spark (15 mins)
Focus on Page 1, Parts 2 and 3. Help them link specific locations (e.g., the cafeteria) or specific people to the physical feelings identified in Stage 2.
Look For: Defensiveness when naming people; encourage naming "behaviors" (e.g., "when someone whispers") instead of just "bullies."
Key Question: "If we were watching a movie of that moment, what is the very first frame that makes your body start to echo?"
4
Reflection (5 mins)
Wrap up by focusing on the "Need Identification" section. This shifts the perspective from "I'm bad for being angry" to "I have a need that isn't being met."

Ripple Slides Module 02
Ripple Slides
Understanding our impact on the school environment.
INNER COMPASS PROJECT
The Anatomy of a Ripple
The "Drop"
The action or choice you make (shouting, pushing, slamming a door, or even walking away).
The "Ripple"
The unintended consequences that affect the people around you.
DROP
Peers
Teachers
School Climate
Impact is Not Intent
"I didn't mean to."
This is about your intent (what you wanted to happen).
Intent describes what was in your head before the drop.
"This is how it felt."
This is about your impact (what actually happened).
Impact describes the feeling other people have when the ripple hits them.
True accountability happens when we address the IMPACT, not just the intent.
Taking Responsibility
Responsibility is having the courage to say:
"I see how my action affected you, and I am here to fix it."
Impact Log Worksheet Impact Log
MODULE 02: THE RIPPLE EFFECT
NAME:
DATE:
"A ripple happens even when we don't mean for it to. Let's look at how one choice can affect the whole school pond."
1
The Choice (The Drop)
Describe a choice or action that happened recently at school (or use an example):
2
The Ripples (The Impact)
Peers
How did this choice affect students near you?
Teachers
How did this choice affect the adults in the room?
Self
How did this choice affect your own goals or peace?
The Truth Table
MY INTENT (The "Inner Voice")
What was I trying to achieve? How was I feeling inside?
VS
THE IMPACT (The "Outer Reality")
Based on the ripples I mapped on Page 1, what actually happened to others?
3. Repairs
Accountability means fixing the Impact, even if the Intent wasn't bad. How can you repair the water for others?
A clean apology: "I see my choice affected you by _________. I'm sorry."
An action: Help fix what was broken or redo the task quietly.
A commitment: "Next time I feel _________, I will try _________ instead."
My Repair Plan:

FACILITATING REPAIR
The Philosophy
Accountability is not about shame; it's about ownership. The goal is to move the student from "I didn't mean to" (defensive) to "I see what happened" (accountable).
Conversation Starters
Level 1: Defensive/Denial
"I hear you when you say you didn't mean for that to happen. Let's look at the ripple anyway. Who was standing closest to you?"
"We're not talking about your heart right now; we're talking about the water in the pond. What happened to the water when the drop hit?"
Level 2: Reflective/Aware
"Now that you see how [Person] felt, what do you think is needed to make things level again?"
"If you were [Person], what would you need to hear from me to feel safe or respected again?"
The Repair Script
Guide the student to fill in these blanks before they speak to the person affected.
Step 1: Acknowledge Impact
"I'm sorry that I [Action]. I see that it made you feel [Feeling/Effect]."
Step 2: Own the Intent vs Impact Gap
"Even though I was trying to [Intent], I understand the result was different."
Step 3: The Offer
"To make this right, I will [Action/Repair]. Next time, I'll try to [Coping Strategy]."

STRATEGY DEPLOYMENT
Strategies Library
Suggest these tools if the student is struggling to name their own during the card activity.
Cool Down
Box Breath: In 4, Hold 4, Out 4, Hold 4.
5-4-3-2-1: Find 5 things you can see, etc.
Water Break: The physical act of walking and swallowing water calms the nervous system.
Speak Up
The Pass: "I need a 2-minute break to reset."
Boundary: "I'm feeling overwhelmed; can we talk about this later?"
The Pivot: "I don't understand this; I'm starting to get frustrated."
Move On
The Task: Organizing a desk or doodling to shift focus.
Positive Pivot: "That was a bad moment, not a bad day."
Future Focus: Think about one thing happening after school.
Session Flow
1
Category Sorting (15 mins)
Present the Strategy Slides. Discuss why different intensities need different tools. Help the student select 1 tool for each of the 3 categories for their Coping Cards.
2
Roleplay/Trial Run (15 mins)
"Let's pretend we're in [Trigger Location] right now. I'm going to say [Trigger Spark] and I want you to look at your cards and pick the right tool. Let's practice saying the words out loud."
Note: Physical practice is key. If they chose "Deep Breathing," actually have them do it. If they chose "Asking for a Break," have them say the exact script to you.
3
Advocacy Plan (15 mins)
Accountability is a two-way street. Help the student decide which teacher or staff member needs to know their plan. This ensures the student is supported in using their tools without being penalized for "walking away" or "taking a break."
Follow-up Tip:
In your next check-in, ask about a "near-miss": a time the student felt triggered but used a tool before a "drop" happened.
