Just like weather changes in the forest, emotions change in our bodies. All feelings are natural! It's about how we navigate them.

Establishing 2nd Grade Routines, Community & SEL (Days 1-5)
Unit Launch
Daily Pacing
60-75 Mins: Morning Meeting, interactive routine game, and independent SEL scrapbook activity.
Theme
"Crew Camp": Reframing the classroom as a collaborative campsite where all students are active members.
Prep Needed
Print student worksheets, secure coloring supplies, scissors, glue, and assign preliminary cubby spots.
Monday
1 Finding Our Trail (Introduction & Tours)
Focus Routine: Locker/Cubbies, Carpet Transitions, Material Care.
Morning Meeting: Introduce the camp theme using Slide 2. Play the "Name Lasso" circle game. Kids call out a name and gently roll a yarn ball to a classmate to build a collaborative classroom web.
Guided Practice: Perform the "Classroom Safari"—walk students in a quiet single file line to locate essential zones: pencil sharpeners, turning-in baskets, and the cozy library nook.
Student Work: Distribute the Trail Guide Scrapbook Page . Guide students to draw their camp tent, list 3 personal favorites, and color their "hiking gear" to express their individuality.
Tuesday
2 Trail Rules (Norms & Safety)
Focus Routine: Attention Getters (e.g., "Hiker, Hiker! / Camp, Camp!"), Line Order, Active Listening.
Morning Meeting: Discuss the concept of a safe campground using Slide 3. Introduce "Whole-Body Listening" (eyes watching, ears listening, mouth quiet, body still).
Active Game: Teach the Trail Walk . Students wander the room safely. When teacher calls "Rattlesnake!", they freeze instantly. Practice freeze transitions until kids match the classroom safety benchmark.
Student Work: Distribute Trail Rules Charter . Guide the crew to complete the "Our Trail Pledge." Students brainstorm, draft, and sign their custom trail boundaries to anchor shared accountability.
