THE BRAVE SECRET
Meet "The Wobbles"
The Wobbles is that shaky, nervous feeling inside your tummy when you try something hard.
Guess what? EVERYONE gets the Wobbles—even grown-ups! Being brave doesn't mean you have no Wobbles. It means you dance with them anyway!
Let's Shake Out the Wobbles!
🕺💃
Stand up! Shake your hands for 5 seconds. Shake your left foot. Shake your right foot. Wobbles... BE GONE!
Movement Prompt: Get up and shake them off! Slide 3 of 5
GROWTH MINDSET POWER
The Magic Word: "NOT YET"
When something is hard, we don't say "I can't do this."
Instead, we add the magic word: "NOT YET!"
Sad Brain Says:
"I'm bad at drawing."
Brave Brain Says:
"I can't draw this... YET! but I can try!"
Say it out loud together: "NOT YET!" Slide 4 of 5
CLASS CHALLENGE
Our Brave Leap Pledge
Let's stand tall, cross our arms like superhero shields, and repeat our class pledge:
1️⃣
I will try, even if I feel the Wobbles!
2️⃣
Mistakes help my brain grow big and strong!
3️⃣
I will cheer for my friends when they try hard things!
Congratulations! You are ready to take your Brave Leap! Slide 5 of 5

Read-Aloud Discussion Guide
Book Focus: Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall
Duration
15 Mins
Read-Aloud Purpose
Help 1st graders connect Jabari's physical fear of jumping off the diving board to their own "Wobbles" (feelings of anxiety) when trying new or hard academic and social tasks.
1 Before Reading: Activate Brains
Show the cover of Jabari Jumps. Ask the class to look closely at Jabari's body language.
Observe: "Look at his arms and face. How do you think Jabari feels about diving today?"
Predict: "Has anyone ever stood on the edge of a high pool, slide, or step? What did your tummy feel like?"
2 During Reading: Spot the Wobbles
Pause at key moments to call out physical signs of nervousness and growth mindset coping strategies.
When Jabari stretches:
"Why is Jabari stretching instead of jumping? Is his brain ready? What is he doing to delay?"
When Dad squeezes his hand:
"His dad says, 'It's okay to feel a little scared. Sometimes a deep breath helps.' Let's try that squeeze!"
3 After Reading: Connect & Pledge
The Wobbles: "How did Jabari's feelings change? Did he stop feeling scared, or did he jump while feeling scared?"
The Takeaway: "Being brave doesn't mean you aren't afraid. It means taking the leap even with the Wobbles!"
Teacher Pacing Tip
Keep answers rapid-fire! First graders learn courage best through movement and immediate, energetic peer reinforcement.

Friendship Read-Aloud Guide
Book Focus: The Invisible Boy by Patrice Barton
Duration
15 Mins
Why This Story Matters
Brian feels invisible because nobody notices him, greets him, or invites him. A new boy, Justin, arrives, and Brian uses the quiet courage of a drawing to connect. This guide helps students realize the immense power of simple gestures.
1 Before Reading: Making Connections
Look at the cover where Brian is drawn in grayscale (colorless) while everything else is colorful.
Observe: "Why do you think Brian is drawn in gray? How does a person feel when they feel 'invisible'?"
Discuss: "Have you ever felt left out at recess or in a classroom? What did that feel like?"
2 During Reading: Spotting Inclusion
Point out how Brian's coloring changes as people show kindness and friendly courage.
When Justin sits alone:
"Justin is eating a different food. Kids laugh. What did Brian do? He chose the quiet courage of drawing a friendly picture."
Brian turns colorful:
"Look at Brian! He has color now! Why did that happen? Because Justin and Emilio looked, smiled, and waved him over!"
3 After Reading: Turning Words into Action
Simple Acts: "Do you need to do something giant to make a friend? Or can a simple wave and smile change someone's day?"
The Challenge: "Who can we make feel 'visible' and colorful in our school today?"
Classroom Friendship Mission
Assign a secret mission: Tell students to pick one person at lunch or recess they haven't spoken to yet, look them in the eye, and give a high wave!
