Staff Heartbeat Guide
Connecting & Grounding • 20 Minute Community Circle
Purpose & Preparation
This circle is designed to strengthen the relational fabric of our staff through brief, intentional connection. In just 20 minutes, we shift from "doing" to "being" together.
Before You Begin
- Arrange chairs in a clear circle with no tables or barriers between staff.
- Select a "Talking Piece" (something meaningful or tactile).
- Place a small "Centerpiece" (plant, candle, or fabric) in the middle.

The Values
Respect • Shared Leadership • Connection • Safety
1
Opening: Setting the Space (3 mins)
Welcome the staff and briefly state the circle's purpose. Invite a moment of silence or collective breath. Read the following quote:
"Connection is why we're here. We are hardwired to connect with others, it's what gives purpose and meaning to our lives, and this is why it's so important." — Brené Brown
2
Check-In Round (4 mins)
Introduce the Talking Piece. Remind everyone: "Listen with your heart, speak from your heart."
PROMPT
"Using a 'Weather Report' (sunny, cloudy, stormy, breezy), how are you feeling internally today?"
3
Connection Rounds (10 mins)
Pass the Talking Piece. Aim for 2 rounds if time allows, or 1 deep round. Select one:
OPTION A: The Hidden Spark
"What is a hobby or interest you have outside of school that most of your colleagues might not know about?"
OPTION B: The First Chapter
"What was your very first job (not teaching), and what is one thing you learned from it?"
OPTION C: Small Joys
"Describe a 'perfect' Saturday morning in three words or less."
4
Closing: Returning to the Day (3 mins)
Thank the staff for their presence and vulnerability. Close with this short passage:
"We are not just a collection of individuals working in the same building; we are a community that carries each other's weight. As you walk out this door, carry the connections we made here into your classrooms."
Final Step: Ring a bell or share one collective exhale.
